Can Monti Caps regenerate?

Hello, I am new to SPS and I recently received a large piece of pink Montipora capricornis from a friend and I have a question. This piece was from the lower level of the shelf and only has polyps on the outer edge. Will it eventually re-colonize the dead area or does it only grow outwards? here is a picture. Thanks.

It won't regenerate per say if it has no flesh and polyps on that area. But it should regrow out over the dead area with time. I personally would discard the dead area down to closer around the live area since algae loves to grow on fresh coral skeleton which can hinder growth.
I had a cap die down from the size of a dinner plate to 2 spots the size of a pea when my tank crashed.:headwally: I broke of most of the dead parts off around the tiny pieces that were alive and placed them in another tank I had. When it started growing again it covered all the dead skeleton that was left around it and grew in every direction.

I bought a 2"x2" peice of red monti that looked just like your does. It regrew over the white in a matter of 2 weeks
. I personally would leave it be.

Thanks a lot guys! after only 2 days, I've already noticed new growth. I didn't know SPS could grow this quick. My Clown Goby already decided it was it's new home as well.
