hello all !

I have noticed that some of you have those really cool blue clams. I was told by my LFS that I need metal halides to keep clams. Well I don't have metal halides YET but I really want a clam. For those of you who have clams and don't have metal halides, how long have you had the clams and are they thriving ?

Thank you for your help !

yea, thats a great link....i guess i was one of the lucky folks....i got a crocea clam under some pc...and its been healthy and happy for a good 7-8 months now.....if it was up to me, i wouldnt have gotten it because i knew my lights would sustain it...but i recieved it as birthday gift who nothing other than that i love my tank....so she got me clam!!!.....i gave it try knowing that i would eventually get in to halides......well, i never got the halides cause everything is growing in my tank just fine....probably cause every i have are low lights....exept for a few sps and the clam...which are very high up

I had a clam under PC lights in a 46g bowfront tank and it did just fine. I recently tore that tank down and the clam ended up going to my mothers tank (under PC lights) for about a month and a half. Now that I have the new Solana tank with MH's the clam is much happier, but has to be near the bottom of the tank...when had it placed under the PC's I had him Front Center and at the highest point to receive the most light. He did keep trying to commit suicide though, would find him at the bottom upside down alot...but I think the fish/crabs would knock him off. Start out with a Smaller clam to get it used to the low light if your not going to do MH's anytime soon.

Good luck.

good news - clams will filter nitrates from your water column

bad news - clams will put a strain on your alk and calcium levels.

But, they sure are purdy.

just go with mh. i have a maxima and crocea in my 28 under a 250w mh and wouldnt put them with anything less.

this is one of mine from the seller's tank. mine stays way up at the top of the tank attached to a rock and loves the light. my crocea is at about the same level on a different rock and both havent moved from their spots. you will also have to keep up with alk and calcium and make sure theyre good
