Can we talk about links and reds

Where is the action to take?

this is the problem with our hobby ... ppl like you ! and I mean this with respect.... Please read on.

you are looking for a "manual"

you want me to come on here, or u want company Z, to tell you "1 drop per 100 G water will make your corals red"
this is not true, it can never be true. one cant write a manual for reef keeping. but you demand it !

then when a company does just what u asked for, and gives u a manual, you ask for the underlying science, which to you make no sense ! look like academic banter !

now ,.... the articles, study the RED fluorescent protein. they conclude, elements X and Y are needed, for the Red fluorescent protein to get excited ... [of course, source light in correct spectrum needed to excite it ...] so what does that mean ? it does not mean dose X and Y. it just describes the needs for the Red protein.
now ... in a special case, where X and Y are used up, Red protein might not get its "needs" and loose the battle... in that case, the "Manual" that company Z wrote for you, makes sense. dose product Z as recommended, and you should replenish the lost element, and bring its concentration to that of the Natural salt water, and the Red proteins would have all its needs, and would reproduce again and shine for you. this is where the ingredients to products like B-balance come from .

now ... product we used as example above, will only work, in the case where elements X and Y are used up, and reds are lost as result of THAT ... in that case, and that particular case ONLY, product I used as example above will work. if your reds are not there cause your lights are off ... product Z will not turn them back on :)

I don't want a manual. I have figured out exactly what works for me over the last 20 years. I have also been out and seen hundreds of SPS tanks in the US and know where I fit amongst my peers and know that my tanks are better than most and that I do it better than most. Besides, nobody makes a manual for "dose nothing to your tank," in this particular scenario.

I think that your supposition that most people are looking for a manual is very much true in a lot of cases. However, this is not me.

I do read every AA article, scour the chemistry forum and listen to every speaker at MACNA or the local "shows" for ways that I could be doing something better. I listen, learn, research and figure out how these studies, science and academia can make me a better hobbyist. Most importantly, it is up to me alone to decide how each piece of info can help or hurt me.

What I do not want is a bunch of supposition without control, a baseline and incremental measurements for success all wrapped up as science.

I don't care what companies sell what. This is America and if somebody can sell a product, then good for them (as long as it is ethical and legal). I have gone out and got mine, so I don't begrudge anybody for getting theirs.

Seriously, though. What is the action to take? How can you measure success? There are linked articles and questions about how they can be applied and we got a lecture on needing a manual. What application did you get from these articles? I have read that you like to dose iodine and potassium, but that does not appear to be from the articles, rather from your own science. In actuality, science and anecdotes from reefers has gone farther to advance the hobby than from real scientists, so these have tremendous value and cannot be discounted. ...back to the articles, where did I miss the conclusions, recommendations. Please spare us the "we are too stupid to get it," especially since you don't do anything to help beyond just posting links and making fun of us. If you think that I am too stupid, then send me a PM and I can send you a resume for you to judge with all the facts.

to help get this back on track I've always found the simpler approach is generally the most effective in terms of SPS and growth/coloration. I've found that dosing the minor trace elements are not needed unless your tank is packed to the brim with large colonies that have a huge draw on the elements, otherwise I believe water changes will take care of those trace elements and if you're uncertain and at a dead end then that's what test kits are for, test away! Maintaining stable Ca/Alk that's on par with your nutrient levels is what I've found to color up any and all coral if everything is maintained in the proper ratio's. What I mean by the above is running your alk at the proper levels dependent upon your no3 and po4. One thing I've always found to be most important in coloration is having a healthy amount of nutrients, 1-5ppm no3 and 0.03-0.08ppm po4. I'm personally not a fan of ULNS which seems to usually do more harm than good unless a very experienced reefer is behind the wheel. That's just my two cents on what's led my tank to be a success (so far), stable Alk/Ca and a healthy amount of nutrients to go along with it.

.

I'm sorry if I have made wrong assumption about u.

For me, the articles here helped me understand redish color of my corals more. Has provuded me with some background why products like b-balance work, and also corrected me on some more of my assumptions.
It was asked if reds can be kept. I showed my way and some articles.. There are other and better ways ! My oreference is kighter colours. To me they shine more. So I do my way.

I have dosed a lot of things over the years. I don't dose anything on a set scheduale though. I dose whrn I feel its needed, and would use again based on observations. Iodine is different altogehter. Potasium is major element. Question is why its used up in different tanks. I have my papers on that too. But totaly different discussion than this threat. But both of these.

Aat the end. It would cost me more to find boron and nickel to dose. So I buy b-balance.

So two questions
1) why are you involved in this thread if you already no what to do?
2) so can you tell us what works for you?

I wanted to post pictures and answer your questions like I did on Post 14. For my part in the derail, my apologies.

My system is pretty simple, as outlined. If you have any questions, then I will be happy to answer.

Well here is a piece i picked up last weekend and sorry for the bad picture but dont have anything other then my Iphone 5 I think is a milliepora but i could be wrong on the ID so if you know what it is please let me know. You can see the deep rasberry pink a little from the picture but its very hard to capture the true color with the leds and not having a camera. so from reading this thread I was going to start dosing potasium is this correct?
