Can you help me with my frogspawn?

Here is my frogspawn:

I added him two days ago. First day was under PC's in my BC29. Yesterday I added LED's and have them running about 20% blue and 20% white. Is this normal for a newly introduced FS? I tried another one before and the same thing happened and it never came out and eventually just died. This was the same way it was under the PCs. It was nice and healthy looking from the guys tank I got it from. He is in the sand near a rock that would block some of the main flow so that it's not right on him.

trate-10
trite-0
ammonia-0
salinity-1.026
temp-81

Bag method. No drip. I've read it throws off ph. I don't have any but could get some. My other corals acclimated fine it just sends to be frogspawn I can't get to do anything.

a big problem with frogspawns and torch corals is they tend to move about in the bag during transportation which can cause the flesh to get damaged and start to recede. try and keep it out of any direct flow and hopefully is should recover.

I have two of these and I can tell you that I learned early on that you must acclimate them. Your parameters and different from the LFS and in most cases their salinity is lower. Therefore, just by temperature acclimating and not drip acclimating them, you run a risk of shocking them and killing them. I would try to dip it in some coral RX, but it does not look good.

If you try a frogspawn again, try to drip acclimate it first and you should see benefits. Also, bring some water to your LFS and have them test everything for you, they may charge you a dollar or something like that, but you get an experienced second opinion with a different test kit.

Good luck!

Thanks all. At this point I'm gonna try and dip and hope for the best. If it doesn't work i might stock away from fs for a bit and work with some other stuff and try again later maybe.

Params for this fellow are in my sig line.
Frogs can retreat like that when stressed and by my experience they don't like quite as much light as hammer, especially if the light is new. Get him fixed so he doesn't move and nothing can knock him over, once his dip is done, and then let him rest a bit. I've got a stressed fellow I bought as a rescue, and he's looked worse when we started. Now with good water and just feeding my fish so there's nutrient in the water, he's coming out more and hopefully regrowing tissue: the first 3 days he wouldn't come out at all, then just barely out during actinic twilight for a day or so, and then he's starting to come out in daylight as well, so it's just a slow process.

Well thanks for the help but unfortunately i lost this one. Thays 0 for 2 on frogspawn. No idea why. I'll keep chugging along :/

just make sure you have all your levels tested and frogspawn should be fine in a biocube. ive had some hammers and frog spawn in my 14g biocube with the stock lights just fine need to just keep you eye on your lvls nitrate, nitrite ammonia, ph, alk, magnesium, calcium. and I know your tank is 81 but does it fluctuate more than that or does it stay 81 all day.

So I would eventually like to add one of these into my reef once it is cycled, would drip acclimating would have prevented the problem?

Drip and dip is always important and makes a huge difference in your success rate, but it is not the only thing that will make a coral survive in your tank.

Other critical things are:
  • Stable and consistent parameters
  • Consistent water changes
  • Proper feeding and exporting of nutrients. i.e skimmer, carbon dosing, etc.
  • Proper placement in your tank (light and flow wise)

I'm sure I am missing something, but these are, in my humble opinion, the most important ones.

I agree those are the most important. I just thought it was weird because frogspawn seem to be the only thing I have this issue with. They disintegrate almost overnight.

I can tell you from experience, that my frogspawn did not like direct flow. I moved it from my rockwork(direct flow as suggested by LFS), down to my sand next to my hammer(lower flow and less light), and has opened fully, and seems quite happy now.
