Cancun Snorkelling & help

Hello,

In Feb. I will be in Cancun and I plan on doing a bit of snorkeling there. I will be my first time ever snorkeling, and was wondering if anyone here has gone there and where the better place's are to go? Also what is a good disposable underwater camera to get? Thanks for any help that you can provide.

The best snorkeling I have ever done in that area was just out from the Eldorado Seaside Suites. They have a large reef right in front of the property. The problem is that their beach is guarded & you may not be able to access it without staying there.

Have you looked into getting a case for your land camera?

Don't waste your money with a disposable camera. if ur lucky 1 pic will come out after you use up 4 cameras. Just enjoy what you see, or get a cheap used u/w camera that you can use over and over. hint * see other thread *.

I stayed at Riu Palace last year and they had some ok snorkeling in the far Left (east?) corner of the swim area. If you really want to see some good fish though go to Xeh-la, a botanical park of sorts. Its all inclusive and they have excellent snorkeling.

You could also try XCaret- that one is personal favorite because there is more to do than just snorkeling, which can get tiring. They have an underground river you can swim in, and animals, and dolphin swims, as well as some small ruins.

I stayed in Riviera Maya which is about 20 or so miles south of Cancun. I booked an actual trip called the "Snorkelling Adventure" It was absolutely amazing. We got to go on 3 separate "dives" if you will, and were served lunch and got some beach/relax time in between. I think it was under $100 per person. I would say it was worth it. Lots of Grouper, Snapper, Anemones, Barracuda, Various Corals, Tangs, etc. etc. etc.

The Original Snorkelling Adventure. The actual reef we dove on was down around Playa Del Carmen, but well worth the bus ride to get there.

Ditto dcombs44,
A day trip south to Playa del Carmen is well worth the time. You will be able to book an "excursion" with your hotel in Cancun. DO NOT FALL FOR THE OFFERS AT THE AIRPORT WHEN YOU FIRST ARIVE!! After you have gotten to your hotel, rested and ordered your first frozen margarita:D you can then go to the concierge desk and choose one at your leisure. I would suggest trying your best to find one that actually snorkels in Playa. Most will go over to Cozumel, Which are OK:o , but are crowded because you will be dealing with the cruise ship crowds. My wife and I went to Cancun five years ago and did a day trip to Playa del Carmen. We have gone to Mexico twice a year since and always stay right there in Playa now. You will fall for it hard I can assure you.
Oh! by the way. If you miss your charter bus back to Cancun because you are having to much fun and swear you have enough time for just one more Frozen margarita, no fear. Just ask for directions to the bus station(El autobus), once there buy a ticket for the hotel zone, Cancun.:p
