Candy Cane growth pattern

I have had a candy cane frag with 3 heads for a little over a month now. I think all the heads are growing new mouths. But I cant really tell. Does the current mouth split into two? Or does a new mouth just "appear" on the candy? On my candies it seems like a mouth is appearing. I can post a pic if needed. And is it ok to feed them while they are at this stage?

In my experience, the old heads just seem to split into two or several new ones. I can't think of any reason why feeding them now wouldn't be fine.

This is a terriblel picture(camera is really bad) but above the mouth it seems like another is forming. I dont know. And dont like the circle thats just to give an idea of where I think the second mouth is. But it makes it harder to see it. Sorry.

Keep feeding them even while they are splitting. They grow erratic, basically whatever direction the new mouth points it will grow haha.

I have 7 different kinds of candies in my tank, some grow slow, some grow super fast. The kind you show in the pic if the color is correct has about a medium growth rate compared to other types.

Colors of candies I have:
- Neon green
- Purple
- greenish with blue speckles
- purpleish with neon green speckles
- red with green centers
- almost pure white
- Teal

From the pic it looks like it is just starting the process of growing another head. Will get a lot more drastic soon until it forms a whole new head. The each head will split again, split again and so on until you have a monster colony.

They LOVE good calcium, around 450+ & a DKH of around 9-10. Also dose trace elements. Mine really like Inland Seas Biotrace or seachem Reef plus.

When they get large, they suck up calcium and alk like a black hole so make sure you keep doseing!

You can tell when they get ****ed, such as when alk or calcium is low. They will sort of shrivel up and look like a skeleton. They are hard to kill unless your tank is not taken care of. Yours looks pretty happy.

Wow thanks Garage. That gave me a bunch of info. Thanks for your post. I really hope these guys start growing. The pic is a little different color than what their actual color is. But not too far from it.

nice pic - your candy is happy and growing
your observation is exactly correct - candies undergo intratentacular budding - ie one mouth becomes two and then grow apart till one head becomes two
a nice example of the opposite type of budding can be seen in duncans if you have them. duncans undergo extratentacular budding in that new heads grow off the side/outside the head-mouth-tentacles of the mother

Thanks johnanddawn. This morning I noticed a hole on my candy, the same place I circled in the pic. So Im pretty excited.

I bought some candy about 2 years ago. it was probably 3 heads when I got it. It is now 12 heads or so. They split from existing heads, forming new ones. My trumpets do the same...they don't grow nearly as fast as my trumpets, but still pretty fast.

Hey garage, would you mind posting some pics of those candies, ive only seen greenish varieties and those sound interesting.

Yeah I can post some tonight hopefully :) Out to dinner and then have to hit the airport early, going to ireland for a week! Cadies are pretty much my fav corals, so I decided to start collecting them. Always looking for a variety I do not have.

common names are interchangeable in Caulastrea and it's best to use a scientfic name if trying to ID one to species.

here's a big Caulastrea in my aquarium

Sorry took me so long to get some pics, Went to Ireland for a week and then had surgery yesterday, anyways here are some pics of my various candies.

My big teal I had to photo shop a bit to make the color the way I see it in the tank, camera kept making it look really aquamarine color so had to change it a bit. Other pics I did nothing to. They are under an xm20K right now. The 3 head with the black dot is my white one, really really slow grower. In person it is pure white with a hint of red around the bases.
