Canister Filer & Media

Hello,

I have an 80litre tank. I was considering in the coming months adding a Fluval 106 canister filter just to aid with the filtration a little and install a spray bar for a little more surface agitation.

I know there are mixed reviews on this but what three different types of media would be best to use? I hear Matrix quite a lot online.

Also regular maintenance weekly?

By the way if its a really bad idea let me me know! :o

Thanks in advance.

I used a canister on my 60 cube for 22 years. Just keep it clean. I used carbon and live rock rubble. It was a pod and maybe mini brittle star factory

I am currently using the Fluval 306 on my QT. No problems with it, but if going on your DT, I agree w/ the comment above, keep it clean.

i am running two tanks. My 90 gal is running with fluval FX6...No problems using it ...just keep it clean

While the canister filter can work, a simple HOB unit would be so much easier to maintain IMO. The rock you have in the DT will be your primary biological filter, so there's really no need to use any rubble or ceramic rings and then you may or may not need to use things like GAC/GFO. If you do, something like an Aquaclear 50 would definitely be the way to go. Even if you need to run a mechanical filter for any length of time the sponges that come with these things are extremely easy to use.
