Cannon's Clowns - Breeding Project

Hey guys, Work was crazy this past week and wasn't on the computer much. Wasn't able to get any better pictures of them either.

We purchased them as Mochas but because they are continuing to darken I questioned it. Was told by two LFS that they were onyx.

I just want to know what we have! argh..lol :uhoh3:

I read in several places that there should be a yellow ring of sorts, called the corona. that's the problem with the internet i guess, too much information.


Anyway, thanks again to everyone for the help/input. I'm a bit annoyed because they were sold to us as perculas.

So our growout stand is being built as we speak. We are using a 100gallon rubbermaid tub as our sump. (currently cycling some live rock) That will go underneath the stand. We decided on 2 shelves with 2 40g breeders on each shelf. Each tank will be divided into 2 compartments...so essentially giving us 8 20g growouts. We have an etss 1500 for our skimmer.

All of the pairs are living in and cleaning their pots as well as displaying other positive behaviors EXCEPT the ocellaris pair... they are too occupied with the GSM's next door. They are not laying eggs yet though. Guess it's time to start playing Barry White!!!
 
Welcome to breeding! You are going to have your hands full if all of those pairs start spawning. Do you have a warehouse of growout tanks ready? lol

The "mochas" were not mislabled by your LFS. They are 100% not Onyx. As mentioned before, Onyx are Perculas and don't have a muddy color. Those are clearly an Occelaris species, most likely mochas. The blending of the color on their fins is a dead giveaway. I breed C-Quest Onyx and I encourage you to check out any of my threads if you want to see pictures of what true Onyx look like. You'll immediatley see the difference!

So just a quick update. A local reefer in our reef club helped us out and built a stand for our grow-out system.

we plan on having (4) 40 gallon breeders, separated into 2 sections each with acrylic.
we are using a 100 gallon rubbermaid as a sump (shown in the picture). Our ETSS 1500 will be to the side near the RODI.

(this is in it's temporary home...cycling some LR and base rock)

Great progress on your thread. I love the new grow out rack. I just got some acrylic tanks made and need to start my own thread but wanted to tell you that its great you have the support of your better half. I am still trying to convince mine this is a good idea :)

He got me into the hobby and created a monster. :spin2:
we went from 1 display tank to 3 tanks in a year. The breeding was his idea and we were only going to try with 1 pair, but when he let me loose it turned into more...haha. and since he's into the hobby too, it was easy to get him to go along for the ride.
 
Hey Great info on differentiating between Ocillaris and Percula Clowns. With so many designer varieties available out there it's hard to know what you are getting if you have an untrained eye. I was able to easily confirm what I had with all 4 of my clown pairs. Percs vs Ocillaris

so we just had the baffles in our sump/fuge replaced with 1/2" acrylic. so far so good. seems to be better flow. We also sold the 8 bulb nova extremes and replaced with shop lights from home depot. it's not nearly as bright but it does the job...and there is a noticeably difference in the water quality (clean and clear, algae is not growing out of control like we'd see a few days after thoroughly cleaning tanks.

Adam and Eve, our picassos, are really getting frisky with one another. I keep hoping that I'll come home from work and see a clutch of eggs.
 
ok. first and foremost, I apologize for the dirty tank. there's some gha in there from before the sump repair and was planning to clean it off but I do not want to disturb what they are doing right now. the majority of the gha is on the outside of their pot...

you do not need sound for this video unless you want to hear bubbling..lol..

just showing a little action. these are the 2 I mentioned in my previous reply. they have been friskier than ever the past few days.

 
Well we were wrong as far as which pair would lay for us first..

Archie and Edith, our Clarkiis, laid their first clutch for us (we've had them since late December, and were previously laying). I estimate they started between 8-9ish. Not sure how long it actually takes with laying and fertilizing...or if they were even finished.
We didn't want to get too close and bother them, so I apologize for the blurry pic.
