Canopy Weight?

I just set up a 40g breeder and I'm in the process of building a canopy for it. I have the main part of the canopy built and it's a little heavy. It got me wondering how much weight I can actually put on the rim of my tank?? Here is what I have so far.




I still want to add moulding, a box to hold my lights, and a little shelf for an auto-feeder. Is there any rule of thumb out there as to how much weight can sit on the rim of an aquarium?

Your 40 br. will have no problem holding the weight of your hood.
However the piano hinge should be stainless steel or brass. The one yo have pictured I( I believe is steel) will rust very quickly.

Thanks for the response and the compliment on the build. That piano hinge was on my last canopy for 4 or 5 months. It doesn't look shinny and new any longer but there isn't any rust. I think it might be stainless, would it have rust on it by now if it was nickel?

Ss will rust too, mostly surface rust though.
