Can't find dead chromis

I have a 75g mixed reef. I recently bought 3 blue green chromis. They were doing great for a few days and all of the sudden one of them starts breathing heavy and staying in one spot and now I can't find him. Last time I saw him he was alive but pretty sure he won't make it through the night. If I can't find will it crash my tank? He's pretty small but I just want to make sure so I can do everything I can because I'm going out of town for 2 weeks and won't be able to do anything once I'm gone.

Of your tank is cycled well should not crash your tank, monitor ammonia as a precaution, if you see it rise or better yet fish are breathing heavy and looking poor, do a good water change run some carbon.

It's been running for over 6 months now. Is an ammonia spike pretty much a forsure thing that will happen? Cause right now all I have is 5 gallons of saltwater right now and can't get a hold of anymore before I leave..

Sorry about the fish but you don't have any spike coming so don't panic ok :) The tank and crabs will make quick work of dealing with some extra food. If you really want to be cautious you could halve your fish feeding for the next week but honestly you don't need to really worry about anything except for what killed the fish in the first place.

That's a relief! I've tested everything from ammonia, nitrates and nitrites and it all read zero. My ph level is fine and salinity as well. Just seemed really weird to me because he was doing fine this morning and then out of the blue he's not while all the other fish are doing fine.

I don't recall the last time i actually found a dead fish.
They always just magically disappear.
I'm sure they just end up being the rock where they become food for your cleanup crew.
A dead chromis in an established tank of that size shouldn't phase it one bit.

If you find them take them out. If its a big fish then you really need to take it out.

Something small, never going to find it unless your pumps catch it.

Like mentioned above, your CUC probably took care of it, but if you have an extra powerhead lying around, you could use this to try and flush the corpse from the rocks.

do you have a QT tank? if your that worried about it you should if you don't. and next time maybe when you start seeing trouble transfer into QT tank so that you can keep an eye on it

Well good news my girlfriend woke up this morning and said all 3 chromis are swimming around and appear to be in good condition and eating. I really don't understand what was happening to him.

I started with three chromis and am now down to one (somehow I thought I could beat the odds lol) which seems to be the norm in smaller tanks. Never found the bodies nor were they sick or anything before their disappearance. So glad yours turned up healthy!

In a 75 they will winnow themselves down to one with time. They don't school in a tank that most hobbyists can fit in their house. You can QT next time if you can catsh it easily but like others have said one dead one will not cause any water concerns. I would be more concerned with the stress on the fish and the tank as a whole trying to take one out.
