It's a really good idea - let me know if you experience the same results. I bet you're way ahead of me on getting it together.
I am aiming to fill the sump around the second week of October. Unfortunately, I am having to build a stand (well, three actually) as part of getting these 2 satellite tanks setup. I am going with a pretty simple (& inexpensive) 2x4-ish design that should be pretty easy to throw together.

However, some extra time will be required to complete some details that will make it all look nice and non-white-trashy, if you no what I mean. :)

how about some new pics
Do to a confluence of busy-ness and lazy-ness, I have been unable to get any pics posted recently. I do have a couple of days of update pics, however, on my laptop and camera.

Last night I painted some tank trim, siliconed a pane into a tank, and did destructiveness on my old 29g tanks external overflow (which was a LOT harder then I thought it would be). I got plenty of pics along the way and will try to get them posted today.

This afternoon I am leaving for a sort of church retreat (Walk to Emmaus) that will keep me out of touch of the rest of the world all weekend. No computers, email, REEF CENTRAL, fish tanks, corals, cell phone, or anything! It will be tough... :)

So anyways (enough whininess) if I don't get pics posted soon, it won't be till Monday. So I better get it done! :)

i was thinking of a racial phrase when you said non-white trashy.

note: i have NO obligation to be or currently be racist. i agian i am NOT racist.

Would non-white trashy be equivelent to black trashy? I mean, I AM planning on staining the stands black. But I truely want them to look purty... :)

Anyhow, btw, I am building 3 stands at once because I am building one for a 29g tank for my older brother. And doing this all at the same time will save me time - sort of an assembly line process...

will i sure hope he is helping, oh what did you use to drill holes into the rock?
I used a 7/8 inch hole saw bit (branded Ridgid, from Home Depot, but anything will work). The 7/8 inch bit is exactly the right size to use with the 1/2 inch piping I used for the pillars skeleton. Any bigger and I think I would have been annoyed at the loose fit.

And alas, no help from the bro. He is in Oklahoma City and I am doing this work in Dallas, Texas. He'd help if around, though. And that'd be fun because I'd probably get to boss him around (he IS my OLDER brother :)).

Buut I better be careful since he's probably reading this thread, at least from time to time...

Here is my updated diagram for MY version of this sump....

Notes:

1. Since I will be using a Coralife Super Skimmer 125 that hangs off the back of the sump, I will require less width for the skimmer chamber.

2. I've introduced a RDSB (Remote Deep Sand Bed) to help with NNR (Natural Nitrate Reduction)*

3. Sand in the Refugium section has been replaced with Rock Rubble, as advised by the guy who made the video. He reported in the reefvideos.com forum later that rock rubble worked better for getting at least a little flow through the benthic zone.

4. Mangroves in the sump have been replaced with Chaeto. Though since this is an open top "display" (ha!) sump, I might consider adding some mangroves after I get everything setup. They'd sure be fun to try... Yeah, I think I should probably try that...

5. No aiptasia farm, no need for the UV unit.

That's it for now... And it's not looking hopeful that I will have time to post pics today. We'll see...

PICS!!!

PICS!!!

Ok, sort of. I don't have time to embed many into the thread at the moment. But here is a link to the first of my updated pics uploaded to Flickr...

Here are a couple teaser pics.

Drilling a hole in a piece of glass to replace that pane in that tank. That's the 25G tank that will be the secondary display tank. It had a broken pane, which was a good excuse to drill it for a standard overflow setup.

Painted trim for that 25G tank - Black Matte Krylon Fusion for Plastic all the way, go Travis... :D

Fun with silicone! Installing that pane of glass. I'll try to post a tutorial in the next couple days for the method I use to silicone things together. It has been refined for about the last year. Lots of mistakes, ugly jobs, and finally some pretty ones. This one was VERY pretty. Though I did learn something new that will make the next one (which I will do next week) even prettier... :)

Here I am removing an external overflow from the back of my old 29G tank. This tank was setup fro about 8 months when I woke one morning to a nice crack along the back. That sucked. Whatever the case, it is being recycled for this project.

A distinctive fact about this tank is that I built it completely from scratch, including both the siliconing off the glass together and the construction of that lovely walnut frame. THAT frame is NOT getting painted. :)

Here the deconstruction has been completed. I am going to do something extremely WACKY to fix this tank. Remove the cracked back panel would be EXTREMELY challenging and would probably require destroying the pretty wooden frame. Since I don't want to do that, the plan is to actually just silicone a NEW piece of glass over the back. I have a piece of glass, as you can see sitting in place, that has been cut VERY precisely to fit in between the top and bottom frame, and to be just the right length.

Yeah, it's a bit of a hack. But oh well. I think I can hide the hack pretty well and make it all waterproof, etc. It will just make the tank another 5-10 pounds or so heavier... :)

Ok, so I linked in more then I meant to. Now I am definately going to be late tonight. (oh well... ;))

Do follow the flickr link for more pics...

Gee, I really should post some updates --- I did buy a coral hawfish earlier this week. And I brought a green millipora down from my Ardmore tank that I had specifically bought from Chris a while back for this tank.

I was a little worried I had jumped the gun on the milli. However, it looks great and has at least as many polyps out as it did in my tank in Ardmore, if not more. It looks amazing under that 15000K XM bulb. Now, I do hope that it grows well.... :)

Anyhow, I bought a one of those macro adapter sets from eBay last night. I assume it will be here next week. I hope to get some nice shots for the POTM fish contest.

Whatever the case, I think it will allow be to get some much better close up pics of my tank. Woot!

I've seen those before, but I've never tried them. Tell us how they work. I'll probably be ordering a set then. I'm rather excited about it.

Hey Paul....what type of camera are you using? Just curious about the adapters that you bought as well.

Nice DSLR you have there. I have the Canon 300D with a couple nice lens for the photography side jobs I have here and there. I've heard some good things about the adaptors so you'll have to let us know how they work out for you.
