Thats right! I love it when more and more saltwater fish are becoming captive bred. The maculosus angelfish angelfish has been added to that list. They breed these guys in large ponds then raise the larva in tanks. So these captive raised angels are super hardy, and are already aclimated to aquarium life. Better yet this means when you buy one one less will be taken from the ocean :D Liveaquariua has these cool guys on a super buy sale right now for 39 bucks!! I couldnt let this deal pass. So he came in a few days ago. Let me just say these little guys are awsome fish. About 2 inches but full of personality. I had no idea the mac angels where so colorful at this size. Almost like a koran, but with the white mark where the yellow will grow in. I got one pic of the little guy so you guys could see what they look like. The pic on liveaquaria shows a simi-adult in its gray almost colored stage. If you have ever wanted a large angel, but where scared they where not hardy enough give these guys a try. Ive read they are really hardy, and are a great starter angel. If you have any questions about how the little guys reacts in the tank just ask ill try my best to help you out. He is in a softy reef, with a few lps...which will be moved soon because we all know how tasty they are lol.

Thats great to hear that another saltwater fish can be captive bred! These are beautiful fish. I hope more types for fish can be captive bred in the future.

Yeah, theyve been doing these guys for a pretty long time in SE Asia. He's gonna get REALLY big and have a matching REALLY big attitude, so get a big tank and buckle in.

like all angels, you never know how they will react unless you just do it. so far it has been well behaved, but im gonna take the lps corals out just in case.

Very nice fish! I saw these guys on LA as well, and was happy to see them carrying them now.

The reason I didn't get one! ;)

Likewise. Gorgeous however. I formerly had an adult in my 350 g FOWLR tank. It took care of itself despite 5 other large angels in the tank.

They aren't tank bred, but tank raised. They harvest the fry from the ocean and raise them. They did it with butterflies too. I always wonder if you get an obligate corallivore and tank raise it this way, if they would adapt to aquarium fare better.

yep that would be interesting. Hopefully corallivores are corallivores due to recogniation of food..not due to nutrition/enzyme requirements.

Mark raises an interesting point. I seem to recall that RCT claims that their tank bred, tank raised pygmies are more reef safe than those captured wild. Does anyone else have information on this subject?

I know the mac angels are tank raised/captive raised like I said. They harvest the larva and raise them in tanks. So they have been in captivity pretty much their whole life. So far mine has been more interested in whats going on in my room than the corals..but i know that will probably change. RCT did breed alot of dwarf angels. And they where hardier, and more suited for captivity than their wild cousins. I do know that diet is an instinct, but if the captive food tastes better maybe they will be more likely to eat captive foods and leave corals alone. I wonder if anyone has done a study on it.

That looks like a the white bar variety.

They get HUGE. One of the biggest, if not the biggest angelfish. Either very skiddish or very bold and aggressive. Once he starts growing he will need an 8' tank.

I got one 3 or 4 years back as a captive bred mac. It was about $25 and a little over 1 inch. It stayed in my SPS tank for 3-4 months until it grew to about 2.5 inches. It never touched my SPS or clams. Then, it lived in my 210G for about 15 months more until it was 8-9 inches. In less than 2 years, it was at 9 inches and about 2 inches thick. It was starting to get mean. One day it got into a brutal fight with my passer after being tankmates the entire time that the Mac was in the 210. They were both badly damaged, but lived after being seperated. After 2 months of recovery, it is still growing in a 2500G tank that LFS hooked my up with for adoption. This is a massive fish that is currently at about 13-14 inches - even though some publications say that they don't get that big.

I cannot stress enough how large of a portion of food that this fish will require when it gets to 7-9 inches. It would still eat after taking down a whole sheet of nori. Even if it won't eat your coral, it will do significant damage with it's waste. You have 3 choices: 1). Feed it and deal with the NO3 and PO4 harming your coral, 2). Starve it and risk it taking a liking to your coral or 3). Find it a better home.

It was a cool fish that was super hardy. It is a really pretty fish too for having grow in captivity.
