Carbon tumbling question

Carbon shouldn't be tumbling at all, if possible ( a tough accomplishment if you're using fine media like ROX 0.8). However, if it's not tumbling violently, it shouldn't really be a problem.

Understood on the carbon completely. Just questioning gfo all over the tank like mentioned

FWIW, I mix my carbon and pelletized GFO together in a TLF 150 reactor and I do tumble a bit. I have my outflow going into a 10um filter sock and I change out every 3-4 weeks. This has worked great for me, but as everyone knows, there are many, many different ways to configure our systems. I personally always look for ease of maintenance, as long as what I want to do works efficiently and I get good results.

As long as the GFO is thoroughly rinsed, you shouldn't be getting any sediment. I usually pump 5-10g of RO/DI through my reactor with the outlet going down the drain before I put it back on the tank. Doing this, I've never had a problem with sediment, even with the cheaper grade from BRS.

Same here:thumbsup:

You can put carbon in a sock if you have to. The problem is that if carbon tumbles or is constantly being jostled about, it will breakdown quickly and end-up in the aquarium. If you are going to do it, put a lot in the sock; enough so that most of it stays still.
Hope this helps.

I'm surprised no one mentioned active versus passive filtration with the carbon... Reactor is completely active, where the water is forced through the carbon (with proper flow rates) where any other way is really jus a passive (AND FAR LESS EFFICIENT) method and the water is allowed to pass around the media... Again, properly done as opposed to not...

I have had hair algea sence day one and have sence got two reactors because I didn't want to waste media.been running phosban Julian sprungs formula in a little fishys reactor and have it set up so just the top layer of media is moving/tumbling slowly. I need to buy a test kit but how long will it take to get this under control should I run something else I have to clean the tank glass daily and scrub my frags clean really bugging me

I think someone did and it is a good point, I got the feeling that it might not be a option for whatever reason.

I do this but if it tumbles at all even the slightest I get orange build up coming out if the reactor I just mix Gfo and carbon and change every two weeks

Two things here, guys...
1) We have an ignore feature here, anyone that wants to can ignore posts of anyone but Mods and Admins.

2) Stop evading our profanity filters. They're here for a reason. If what you want to post won't, just accept that it's not welcome here.

When you ignore does it still let the person post and you can't see it how does that work?

I've never had anyone on ignore, but my understanding of the feature is that if you have someone on your ignore list, they can post to a thread that you're subscribed to, but you won't get the notification, and if you open a thread that they have posted to, you will see their avatar but the text area of the post will be blank.
