CARC Update (Central Alabama Reef Club)

Lighting is listed on our website http://www.alabamareefers.com just click on the school tank over on the left and that gives a good description. I think we will probably stay with soft corals and maybe LPS due to the amount of dedication it would take from the principal to maintain the proper calcium levels.

Iconz no need to buy the tub she has purchased a larger container. Just bring it in the jugs. If anyone has sandpaper please bring a small amount, I will have to mount the digitata and I don't think I have any, but I am still looking. I will be bringing a couple of sandwich bags of chaeto for the guys that ask. Was I supposed to bring anybody anything else, remember my memory only goes back to yesterday, so remind me here or email me. Krafty were you wanting a frag of the finger leather? I can frag off a piece of it but you will have to mount it. I haven't been able to mount much of anything because I am out of liverock rubble and frag plugs. If anyone has any rubble, plugs, or disks, that they would like to swap or sale I am in need. If not I will have to drive to birmingham or play shipping. Or if anyone is going into Sarris before coming to the meeting, if you could pick them up and bring them I will pay Chris and he can send them with you. Thanks guys
Allen

Allen forgive me in asking, why do you need sandpaper? Just curious:rolleyes: Is this something you use to mount digitata with?

Allen I would like a bag of chaeto I can bring you a few plugs in exchange. I would also like to purchase a frag of your blue rim monti if you are willing to sale a frag and hold it until I leave J-Town tommorrow.
Thanks

The digata has been fragged a while, I will sand the part where I am going to mount it so that the super glue will have solid smooth contact with the core of the frag and the rock/disk.

That was my question too.

I should have some left ZaoZao, I pulled about a gallon out last week and just tossed it I wish I knew you needed it then I could have gave you a huge bag of it. Will talk to you about the blue rim at the meeting.

Back to H@rry and Mary would it make a difference probably not just what I have read and done, it works but probably not a complete necessity. Anyone else that does the sandpaper? I got that back from reading something on Marc Levensons site and then again when the guy posted an article on here about fragging SPS he also used the sandpaper. In reading it also states that it also removed most of the tissue and polyps from the area that is to be glued which can in turn help prevent tissue necrosis which can kill off the frag.

Just wanted to say thanks a million to all the folks who showed up at the meeting and especially to the guys/gals who stayed late and helped finish the job. I think the tank will look a whole lot better next week. I look forward to the pictures being posted on the website and hope all will enjoy. I think the tank is in very qaulified hands now. We had a great bunch of guys/gals with lots of knowledge at the meeting, and it showed in the care of the tank. We were able to meet every objective that we had set and have an idea of the things we will need to order. It was also good seeing a few new members join our ranks. The meeting was more of a workday and I promise that the next meeting will have more of a learning theme than working theme. We will hold the next meeting over at Sarris, I will need to get with Chris and Nick to see what day is good for them. I will also get this date out within the next few days so that we will hopefully have most of our members make the meeting. There will also be an in depth discussion on the themed topic, not sure what the topic will be, but I am willing to take suggestions. It could be a fragging demonstration, a talk on a specific coral, a specific fish or a group of the same. If I don't have suggestions in a week I will pick a theme. I hope that we can get the registration page up by then and get all members registered at the website and we can get names submitted for officer roles. We missed several members at the meeting I am sure the long drive had alot to do with it and again another reason we will meet again over in Birmingham next month. Thanks again to everyone, who brought or sent frags. 6speed I sent your leather back to T-Town with Krafty, I hope its what you were looking for.

Im glad the meeting went well. Carbon Hill was just too far for us to travel, but we would love to see everyone again at Sarris's in MARCH !!
Im glad things went well with the C-Hill tank.

you talking about haveing a meeting in tuscaloosa at some point and i just wanted to say that if not too many ppl (more than 20-30) we could have it at my place. would just need a head count before so i could get things ready.

Tank Update

Hey guys I went by the school today after church and the tank looked awesome. The water was clear and the coral frags looked like they were trying to strecth to get to that magnificent set of lights. All the fish were out and looked like they were enjoying a day at Carbon Hill reef. Thanks for all the help, my hope is that what we did yesterday will inspire some of these kids in this area to someday come to love this hobby as much as we do. Looking forward to seeing all you guys at the next meeting. Happy Reefing
Dobb.

This is a possibility just tell us what month you want to do it and we will have it there. It may be better to wait till the weather warms that way we can always have it outdoors for the most part and maybe just go in for tank viewings. That is totally up to you. How did the Montipora Digitata take to the tank did the polyps come out today?

Hey guys/gals,
I also went by the school today about 4ish and the halides were off and actinics were on so that was a good sign (timers were working after the second round of programming ;).) Much like dobbs stated the fish were all out swimming the water column and the corals I sould see were open and colorful. I will stop by there tomorrow evening if all goes well and take a clipon light and a 6500 k curly "Q" for the sump/ make shift fuge. I was also thinking about the fuge and we could actually just use a hard sided rubbermaid container that would fit, get a deeper one and put a deep sandbed in it as well. That type would also allow for a really easy hole to be cut and would allow us to just drop down through the existing hard top on the sump. We could just feed it from the fuge with a maxijet.

And what exactly do you mean, 2nd set of programming..........directions.......directions are for amateurs ;)
Glad everything is looking great. My newest curiosity is: What are the benefits / downfalls of a refugium? Thinking about one, maybe a 10 gallon hanging off the end of my tank running of a small powerhead. Drill it and let it gravity flow back in. Would this be a good place to hatch brine or other foods? Inquiring minds gotta know....

i talked to the g/f and she said that we could do it in april with no problems. also Nitro the digita is doing great. polyps opened up shortly after i put it in. also again dobb the g/f LOVES her "grass" as she calls it(the gsp), it also seems to have a bright pink/red feather duster looking thing in the middle of them. hopefully by the next meeting i should have some frags of zoos, candycain, glove polyps, shrooms, and hopefully by then my red w/bule-green centers favia frags will have grown out a bit.

frags

Glad the gsp made it Kraftyforu. I have several feather dusters in my tank. Looking forward to taking the club to T-town if all works out. Maybe the next meeting we can have a really good frag swap.

Mark,
Did I say second programming I meant second testing ;) As for the refugium I will start out by throwing a few postives and maybe others will echo.

1. More water volume outside the display. (Remember the solution to pollution is dilution)
2. A safe place to grow micro critters (pods, worms, mysis, ministars and so on) In the Fuge you don't place predators so they are free to grow with being eaten.
3. A safe place to grow macro algae.

Krafty,
Thats sounds good you guys pick the saturday in april and we will have it at you guys place. Glad the coral is doing good like I said they are pretty hardy just make sure you dont have any huge swings, I will bring you a green one next meeting if you will remind me.

So as to lighting in a refugium. If I do this hang-on-the-end version it will catch decent lighting from my 400 watt MH. You think this is sufficient or should I consider a little more?

If it is clear and you keep the glass clear yes. However, another advantage of a refugium is that you can also run the light for it opposite the tank and help offset some of the ph drop at night. I just run a 6500k 25w curly q above mine and it works great it is on the same timer as the moonlights so its on when the main lights are off.
