CARC Update (Central Alabama Reef Club)

hey Nitro; you still have that little screw in pc bulb? if so i would like to trade for it or something. i need the other light to make my 3g complete

Also i would like to make the point that when we have the meeting at my place that there are animals here. 3 cats and 2 dogs to be exact. i will keep them put up in the bedroom for the meeting but if anyone has allergies then that want completely fix that for y'all since the cat hair and dander will still be in the apt.

School Tank Update pics after everything has had a couple of days to settle in. I went up earlier to put the light on the macro and while there the first thing I noticed was that the fish are now out swimming the display. Even with traffic they weren't hiding like before we went to visit. The principal said they loved it and it looked alot better. Any way still lots of space but at least we had lots of color.

Glad to hear everything is going well with the school tank. I just set mine up this weekend.
I'm gonna try and make the march meeting @ Sarris.

ToyTek-Good Deal, I hope to see you there. I am thinking it will be the 17th of March at Sarris but I am waiting on a confirmation on the time.

is the school tank open canopy? If so I would be worried about some punk dumping a can of coke or equivalent in it. Nice looking tank, I wish I had more time right now or a large anenome for that tomatoe clown lol :)

No canopy on it due to the size of lights (that was done prior to us getting involved). There is glass tops on it, but I do worry about the same. But with over $1000 worth of lights already purchased it would be costly to go back to a DIY in hood lighting. She has a small anemone in the tank but I really think its on its way out.

I've seen coke, beer, potato chips, etc. go in with no ill effects. If anything the sugar will make the polyps open. I understand some people dose vodka although I never understood why. Seems like a waste to me. What you need to worry about is pennies.

The vodka thing gets a certain type of bacteria growing that will eat the nutrients quicker than nuisance algae's and help starve them out.
My question about the penny is.....I understand the copper reference but if I'm not mistaken, pennies are alloy now. Is it still a danger? Or maybe so much built up "crud" on the money?
And Nitro......the "rics" are looking great. Did a full on test kit run this pm and am coming up great except for iodide. Gonna get a bottle tomorrow. May have been whats causing my new frags to not attach very quickly. Tks again for the hookup!!!! :)

I am running the vodka now in mine. I will say that everything is looking great, I am seeing more vivid colors on the SPS and the algae is on its way out. I am dosing a very low amount once a day. So far the only thing I have seen from it was positives. However it may be short lived, so we will just have to see. I know that 10-1 shot for me to tank ratio works pretty good, much like women in bars after a few shots the tank looks great. Just kidding, I don't drink at all so the thought of putting in vodka was really strange but I am glad I did so far. I will say before anyone goes out and buys vodka its not for everyone and study up on it before dosing or you could ruin your corals.

I know Chris' buddy in N.C. has researched it prettty well. He can tell you his dosing (I think it was 1 ml per 160 gallons daily but can't swear to it) but he said the cheaper the vodka the better as it has more dissolved nutrients in it. Just don't get your fish drunk and try to take advantage of them ;) :0

Hey guys, to all the folks took pictures at the meeting this month, send those to myself or Iconz. You can send me a private for an email address (I hate spam). I would like to see those posted on the website. Thanks
Allen

Also the following items have been approved for purchase for the tank, and are on order.

100 GPD RO/DI unit
Tunze Osmolator (auto topoff)
2 Seio 2600 Power Heads
1 Seio Controller
1 Octopus Skimmer NW200
Aquachef Auto Feeder

Probably will need to gather some members up to help with the install toward the end of the month of march. If a few of you guys can help that would be great. We will have to pull the top off the sump area in order for the skimmer to fit in the sump so we will also need a couple of bulkheads I think I may have some I will check. We will probably need to go ahead and put the Fuge in place at that time as well to move the macro over from the sump area. When the parts are in I wills send out a request for help.
Thanks again,
