carpet acclimation question...

hi y'all!

i just got my first carpet anenome and it's a gorgeous blue...

i slowly drip acclimated it to my tank parameters...

gently placed in a semi-protected area on the sand bed from my high flow (for my sps) with moderate light from my 250w de mh's.

question...

the mouth is open fairly wide.

is this normal? if it's not...what should i do?

if it is normal...how long before it's gaping mouth closes up to a normal appearance?

thanks!!! :)

Its very normal for a anem to have a gaping mouth for a while. Mine was 2-3 days at least before it stopped. Has it attached to the tank bottom? Usually they will try and squeeze under the rock and attach to the bottom of the tank. Don't feed it for a few days. No worries yet :)

My carpet had a gaping mouth for nearly a week, I was very concerned because it was not "sticky" and seemed to not eat. Anyway, it is doing great now, I have had it for nearly 2 months and it has already grown and moved to its favorite spot and attatched to the bottom/side of the tank. Yours should be fine, but I would start feeding it as soon as I could, waiting a few days would be ok, I started feeding mine the very next day I got it, however, it took it almost a week before it got sticky enough to keep the food and eat it.

Hey Bergzy - Where did you got the blue carpet from? I was looking for one myself.

i got him at jeff's in tustin. it didnt look in that great of shape but decided to take a chance on it.

it has now moved underneath a rock and i am unable to evaluate its mouth condition.

i can see it slightly but hopefully will come out.

i am guessing that it would have melted away by now if it died!

i'll keep y'all posted on it! :)

Hi Ben,
If you got the one at Jeff's it is likely a gigantea carpet. Mine likes being up in the rocks closer to the light. They also enjoy more current than the haddoni carpets.

Hi Phil,
I was @ Tong's last Friday and they has some blue and green carpets. It was listed as saddle carpet and priced it @ 49.99 ea. I was wondering if it is really a haddoni or if it is really a gigantea. Any thought on it?
Ken

One anemone was blue and green at the same time or they had some blue ones and some green ones?
If they labled it as a saddle carpet it is likely a haddoni. However, if it is both blue and green with the edge a different color than the middle, it is likely C. adhesivium, sometimes called adhesive carpets or pizza carpets. Adhesive carpets don't generally make good clownfish hosts.
Without pictures I can't be certain of anything.
