Carpet and Barebottom

I have a great chance at a Blue Gigantea carpet anem about 12" across. I know that Carpets prefer a sand bottom. I was just wondering if I should take the risk, of course this carpet is big $$$$ and I want it to be happy.
I know the old tupperware and sand trick works too, not sure what I would do if I got it

So what do ya think?

here are my specs:

68 gal acrylic

60 lbs LR, Bare Bottmo (of course)

CLM W/ Dart

22 gal sump with Mag 18

DIY phosphate reactor

250 MH HQI (10K Hamilton) 110 PC Actinic (MH 10hr photo period)

MRC-2 skimmer w/blue line HD 55

Turnover rate for tank is about 30 -40x per hour

If keeping a Carpet with a bare bottom please tell what species of carpet and how long you've kept it.

I've had my green Haddons going on 4 months now, doing very well. Eats a good size silverside every 3rd day and seems to have settled into his home. The tank isn't a complete bare bottom, I have 1/2" of sand on the bottom. He has moved around quite a bit and currently is up at the top of the live rock quite a ways away from the little sand I've got.

I've a small gigantea that wasn't happy until I put him up in the rockwork. I have a great book with some of the best systems in the country. There are two long term giganteas. Both live in the rockwork.

I'm don't think they need a sand bed as much as the haddonis do. FWIW: I have also kept haddoni long term with only a sprinkling of sand. They usually move their foot under a rock.

Ditto.
What book are you referring to, phender?

Oh sure, make me get off my butt and look it up! :)

It is "Ultimate Marine Aquariums" by Michael Paletta. Nice pictures and nice explanations of different types of systems

I have a Blue Gigantea carpet in my bare bottom 150.I moved rock and made kind of hole in the rockwork.Placed him in it.His foot is on the bottom of the tank.I think the rocks under his rim give them a sence of security. He is happy and eating well.He is about 10 inches across.

I don't think gigantea's require a sandy bottom. Both mine (different tanks, slightly different conditions overall) sit at the rock/sand interface. One is in fact a little higher up now that I think about it, maybe 3" above the sand. I don't think they'd notice or care if the tanks they were in were BB.
