He was treated with colchicine, enalapril, and Eukanuba early stage kidney diet. The weird part is we had done blood work just a few weeks prior to him crashing, and it had looked the best it ever had (post diagnosis), almost normal.

Are you familiar with Dr. Vidt (http://www.drjwv.com/), he's my vet, so I feel my boy was in the best hands possible.

Basically, the amyloid protein (a waxy, protein normally produced in response to inflammation) is deposited within the kidney (or other organs) and destoys the kidney cells which can not be reproduced, thus eventually kidney failure.

The inflammation in Shar Pei is FSF - Familiar Shar Pei Fever, which are fevers of unexplained origin. But, just because a pei has FSF does not mean it will have/die of amyloidosis.

There is no way of testing for either of these, that's why it's important to ask the breeder if either of them have been reported in their lines.

Chris, my little girl had elevated protein from her first blood work when I had her spayed at 5 months. For some reason I thought Dr. Vidt was located in Richmond, VA. I am familiar with his work, or at least his studies and web publications. I have been treating with colchicine and K-D. What is enalapril? She'll be two in March.

Garrett.

Garrett,

Hypertension is a symtom of kidney failure, and the enalapril helps with regulating the blood flow.

Does your girl suffer from FSF? I thought colchicine was only prescribed for pei's with FSF to help minimize the symptoms of the fevers.

Here's a great forum if you would like to do more reading, or even post... http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SaveOurShar-Pei/

Chris, no FSF, just elevated kidney protein. I took her to a referral veterinary clinic last May where they did an ultrasound of her kidneys. The clinic gave me some literature to look over including a study done by... shoot, don't have the literature on me here at work. I know the researcher works at Cornell University, just cannot remember her name. Anyway, her study recommended colchicine. My facts are probably way off Chris, just going by memory here. On top of the kidney issues I just spent 2 grand getting a vagioplasty done. (It is as bad as it sounds). She's my baby though. I tell people she has a two-thousand dollar tinkie. The surgeon is hoping that a secondary benefit of the surgery is that the increased flow will help to flush her kidneys when she urinates.

If you're talking about Dr. Linda Tintle, do not listen to a word I'm saying as she is one of the foremost authorities on pei's (along with Dr. Vidt), and she knows best. :D

You can also send your medical records to Dr. Vidt and he will review them. But, that wouldn't be necessary if Dr. Tintle already has.

Believe me, I know of the expenses, my female has had numerous, costly, problems. I'm hoping my adopted boy in my avatar is healthier than my other two, time will tell.

good info i know peis can be alot of work but i want a pei to go along with my pekingese.

my grandmother used to have peis before she died i was always around them
love them and the pekingese.

my grandmother always used to say in norther china near her vilage there were tons of peis and they could be a handfull but she really loved the breed

chris i have seen in person a true pei with almost no wrinkles and was about 65 pounds it was a fawn with black mask i think thats the one that honestly sold me and i was very young when i saw it.

Yep, those are the originals. They are called bone mouths, and should have some wrinkling on the head in the shape of chinese symbols, maybe slight wrinkling in the neck, and a bonemouth (no padding), and tight curly-q tail.

Then the wealthy americans wanted those wrinkles and big heads and that's the way the breed went, for the most part.

Here's my bone mouth female...
