carpet anemone in trouble

I bought a carpet anenome the other day it looks like he is in trouble. I placed him in a pond basket near the top of my tank as I am not sure that I am going to keep him. When I placed him in my tank I noticed white stuff coming out of his mouth. I have eggcrate on the top of my tank so I took it off and the anenome seemed to do better as the white stuff was back in his mouth but the mouth was still wide open. Then the next day the white stuff is back. Tried to find something about this but was unable to. What can I do for this anemone?

Can't really tell for sure which kind it is from that pic. If it's a S. Gigantea, which it could be, they like a lot of flow, but if it's a S. Haddoni, they like very low flow, but want to be buried in the sand.

A description or pic of the underside of its oral disc would help determine which way to go.

+1. Need to know which species it is. I've seen both haddoni and gigantea recover from this, but far less gigs have made it.

The underside, when I had it in the bag, looked like the bottom part of a mushroom.

??? So all brown with no pattern or colors? If so then it probably is a Haddoni. They like low flow, sand to bury their foot, and most the time they like very low lighting while they settle in. That last part is not 100% true, but I had one that would not close it's mouth until I got it down to almost no light in it's corner. Then it perked right up and after 2 days the mouth closed and it dug into the sand.

Remove it from the floating basket. Sink it in a critter keeper. Place a couple of rocks inside the critter keeper.

I would say more tan then brown but no other pattern or colors.
