Carpet Anemone Lighting

What do you keep your carpets under?

What would you suggest for minimal lighting?

I have seen carpets under pc's of 4 watts per gallon, but then again the tank was 15 inches in depth. It depends on a number of reasons, one of them being depth. I would say somewhere between 4 to 6 watts would be suitable for a carpet. Another issue just popped into my mind, it also depends on what kind of carpet you are talking about, there is a big difference in keeping a gigantea vs. keeping a hadoni.

I would not attempt any Carpet under anything less than Halides or an assload of T5's.

Yeh yeh we hear the odd tale of someone keeping one for years under PC's, but I'd bet for every one of those there are a dozen that end up dead that we don't hear about.

Please don't take this as a flame. But I have learned that in this hobby if you ask what the minimum light is for ______? Then you probably are not ready to purchase whatever it is your asking about. That being an anemone, sps, clam, etc. Just my .02...

You are entitled to your opinion, but survey results over the past 10 years consistantly show that haddoni carpets can do quite well under PC lights in shallow(<18") tanks at 4-6 watts/gal.

You would still win your bet. But that would be a good bet even if you were talking about metal halides. You could probably add an "s" to the dozen and still win the bet. You probably could substitute any marine organism that we keep in our tanks and still win the bet.

What do you think people did when their was no such thing as halides or T5's? Now when it comes to gigantea (spell check) i agree.

When I see posts like whats the mimnum size for a PBT or Octo or stuff like that I usualy assume the poster doesnt know what he is talking about ... I'm not looking to get a carpet under pc I just wanted to here what everyone thought. If one doesnt ask questions then there never going to do anything right. I research as best as I can but theres nothing better then 1st hand experience and opinions from others.

I have

- 2 150w 15,000k Halides
- 2 65w Actinic PC's
- 2 65w 65k PC's

I know this is on the low side for lighting (this is a softie/lps tank) so I wasnt sure if I could pull of a carpet or not.

What size tank? Assuming it's in the 120 a haddoni may well do fine set up directly under one of the Mh lamps. I'd probably go with a 10000K or 12000K bulb instead to increase PAR but otherwise I don't see why not.

I would be more concerned with the stability of the system. If you're thinking about putting it in the 120 that "comes in June 3rd" I'd probably recommend not trying until around Thanksgiving, assuming you are using good LS and LR out of your existing system. If you are starting from scratch I'd wait until the new year.

I have mine in a 55g. I have had it for about 8 months. I have a outer orbit fixture. 2x150w HQI's, 2x130w Actinics. Mine is doing great and is about 12" when fully open. Please be aware that you will lose some fish. In 8 months I have lost 5 fish. Only small gobies, seems to be all the new fish. Nothing that was in the tank before(knock on wood).
