Carpet dominated tank

I have made a big decesion, but it is one that i am happy with. Here's the story (money played no part in the decesion it was just what i wanted) i had the chance to either go with a 300 gallon acrylic bow front or go with a 55 gallon carpet anemone tank with no lr, but just a sand bottom and have it as a saddle clowns heaven, the 300 would be an aggressive tank, one in which i allready have. When i went to look at the 300 it was far to bigger than i had expected, and to much work i thought, and since i allready have an aggressive tank so i decided to go with with the carpet tank. (hopefully the right one) So here is where it gets tricky
1. Will i be able to just have it as a sand bottom and no lr?
2. What kind of filtration to you guys have in mind? I would like to go with aquaclear b/c i prefer the sponge filtration, do i need a skimmer?
3. Will i be able to keep more than one carpet in this tank?
4. What kind of lighting am i going to need? It is the standard 55 oceanic.
5. Did i make the right decesion? I think i have and i know thats all that matters but i would like to know what you think.
Thank you all very much.

I just removed my blue carpet from my reef because it was eating to0 much (and too many live fish by the way).

Mine was firmly attached to the underside of a piece of live rock in the sane.

I kept it for a few years under metal halide lighting and fairly strong current.

Do you have clowns living in it and do you use night light?

Thank you very much for your input, but can someone address the questions that i have please, thank you.

Clowns wouldn't touch it after two years. It would consume a full silverside a day if I would have let it. I do have moonlights on the tank.

It ate a coris wrasse, a copperband butterfly and my dragonet that fluttered by to closesly.

1. I tried to help you with this one with my answer already. My blue carpet preferred attaching to liverock through the sand. So in my experience you would likely need some pieces of rock.
2, I would use a skimmer. Anemones release a lot of slime and often times puke some of their food.
3. I don't see why you couldn't keep multiple carpets in one tank as long as you have good filtration, heavy skimming, and good water movement, and feed often.
4. I said that I was running MH lighting for my carpet. I would recommend MH for sure. PC is just not intense enough. And on a 55 you couldn't get enough VHO. I'd go with 2 175 watt MH lamps minimum; maybe 2 250 watt lamps.
5. Whether or not you made the rigth decision is something I guess only you can answer. That's up to you and your goals and desires.

Hope this helps.

phishlet,
Did you try any clown that use S. haddoni as a natural host?
The clowns living in the anemone will keep other fish accidentally wander into it.

what i think is you should put all your anemones in with the other carpet you have in your 12 gallon stock cube.

"5. Did i make the right decesion? I think i have and i know thats all that matters."

why should anyone even care to give you there advise after a comment like that.......

I used to have a carpet dominated 90 gallon tank. I got rid of it and the clown because it kept killing my fish.

Sweet tank, i plan on just having clowns, hopefully the carpets wont eat them, lol.

Yeah that sounds good. I had to take out most of my rock to catch the clown. So I rearranged the aquascaping to fit my liking.

Here is my tank as it is today.

I have had two carpets in the past few years and have had great luck with them. I had a mated pair of Clarki's that had already hosted with a huge LTA that I had, but after a few weeks they eventually hosted with the carpet as well. After that they just went back and forth between the two. Usually they would be in the LTA during the day and in the carpet at night. Sometimes one Clarki would be in the carpet and the other one would be in the LTA. I just figured the female had kicked the male out for awhile:)
Anyway, I was using 250w MH's with 15k Hamilton bulbs and the green carpet that I had was abolutely beautiful. I also ran blue led moonlights at night and it was as if the carpet was totally neon--really cool.

Never really had any problems with the carpet or any other anemone killing fish--although I've never had any anemones without clowns--so that may make a difference. The clowns always seemed to be very protective of their anemone and usually kept the other fish at a distance.

Anyway, HTH. I would definitely go with MH's and moonlights IMO.

Wow,, how old are you? 15? You gonna set your big brother on him next? You have very poor social skills, sonny.

OK

He is wondering if he could use an aquaclear HOB Filter. Cut him slack:) You will need liverock for biological filtration, and you could use an aquaclear for removing some of the debris. Here are a couple of questions.
1. Are you going to use a sump
2.Are you seriously thinking of not using a skimmer, and using an AQUACLEAR FILTER.
3.If you use only sand, how many water changes a month are you planning on.
4.Why, if have your mind made up and know you made a right decision, do you care about our input. (i know that came across rude, but its not meant to be)

Yes. But some large pieces of liverock might help keep the anemone anchored to a certain spot.
2. What kind of filtration to you guys have in mind? I would like to go with aquaclear b/c i prefer the sponge filtration, do i need a skimmer?
Definitely get a skimmer. Sponge filters will not remove organics that will build up quickly in an aquarium that contains just one large anemone that is properly fed.
3. Will i be able to keep more than one carpet in this tank?
You need to upgrade your lighting and filtration before considering additional Haddon's anemones, IMO.
4. What kind of lighting am i going to need? It is the standard 55 oceanic.
Halides would be my choice.
5. Did i make the right decesion? I think i have and i know thats all that matters but i would like to know what you think.
It's interesting that you ask us. Personally, I think you come across as a caring individual and you've made the right decision. Good luck with your anemone tank!

Thank you very much Gary for your help and i will start saving up to get one of the best skimmers out there for my tank. And as far as the LR goes i think i may have two large center pieces but placed on one side of the tank and the other one on the other side of the tank, i know it came out a little complicated but i think you know what i mean when it comes to the pieces of LR. Thank you once again.

1.I was not planning on using a sump, but if i have to i will.
2.I would like to use an aquaclear and a skimmer if possible.
3.I was thinking a DSB would be ok but if not could you please tell me what would be a better choice.
4.I know i made my mind up but i would just like to know from you guys if you think i made the right decesion, sort of like support if you know what i mean.
Thank You
