carpet or bt anemone?

Friday night, I bought an anemone that was about an inch and one hoff in diameter. The small pink tips on the skinny, short green tenticles "attracted" me. In the night, with blue night lights, it expands to be about 3-5 in diameter. Is it a BTA or a carpet? Oh yah, and my pair of ocellaris clowns don't notice it, so how can I have them notice it? Thanks in advance :)

Depending on the size of your clowns and the size of the anemone you may not want your clowns in it right now. Two clowns can rough up a small anemone.

For an ID, you'll need to post pics of the anemone. Not just the top, but the foot and under the oral disk. People will look for the presence of verrucae, these are bumps under the disk. If there are none, it's most likely bta. If there are verrucae, then we definately need a picture!

Do you know what needs each of these nems need? There are different needs for each. There's a good section near the top, it's an FAQ for clowns and anemone. Good reading, and well worth the stop.

Good luck!

did it bury its foot in the sand or on rocks? btas stay on rocks, carpets stay in the sand, possibly between sand and under the rocks.

I thought about asking that too, but we just picked up a bta last week, and it was on the sand with it's foot going back into the rock work. It was attached to the rock and not the sand, but it was difficult to tell since its foot wasn't seen. When we introduced ours, it headed down towards the sand, and into a cave, we couldn't tell where the foot was.

But, if the poster was watching (and most people do) then this may be a helpful question.

So, sand or rock? :)

I still think a picture will be your best bet for the most accurate ID.

Have fun!

I don't want to worry you but I think I read in another thread that when carpets turn that color that they are dying.

from the description it souinds like a BTA. I see dozens of BTA's that are green with pink/magenta tips. Plus ocellaris don't usually accept them which would explain that. Maroons do though, so you may consider switching

it looks bleached and it may be getting bigger because it dont have enough light which would explain why its bleached. thats usually the first thing they do when there not getting the right amount of light. they get bigger so they can take in more light. what type of lighting are you using and what size tank is it in?

My thumb was about 5 inches away.

OMG he is soooo hungry...lol
Feed that poor guy and he will be beautifull in no time. Looks like a bta to me although i am not a bta expert as i only have lta's...lol
But the short stubby tentacles means it needs to eat. Let it settle in and try feeding it small pieces of silversides, mussels, uncooked shrimp...stuff like that daily and it should colour up very nicely for you.

I know 55semireef has great pics of his going from bleached to healthy that hopefully he will poke his head in here and show.

Good luck
Lisa

I'm voting for bta, a very hungry one too as stated above. I don't see any verrucae on the underside of the nem. I'm pretty sure that bta's are the only hosting anemone that doesn't have verrucae. I scrolled the the Anemone FAQ near the top of the forum, and it shows carpets with verrucae.

You've been given good advice, please start feeding your nem, you may be able to turn it around.

like the other guys said he is probably starving but id say just feeding him directly isnt gonna help him a whole lot without having good lighting. the vho's your using probably arent good enough so id say hes straving for light and just direct feeding it isnt gonna make it completly happy for long term. my local pet store uses vho's and all of there nems and corals bleach because of the lack of light.

When you get your nem ready to be hosted by the clowns try aiming a flashlight on it at night. Clowns may notice it they may not.
