Anyone interested? The speaker is Scott Fellman of Unique Corals. His talk is about nutrient export. There should be some cool corals for the raffle and for sale - 10% discount for BAR members.

I went. It was a good talk. Scott is an engaging speaker.
If you read the forums and read any books about reef keeping you are familiar with most of the concepts. More an encouragement to keep up with regular maintenance, do tests (until your observational skills are honed) and keep up with maintenance. Did I mention keep up with regular maintenance?
He talked about the use of biological nutrient exporters. Macro algae being a common one. Others less widespread, tube worms, sponges and clams. One person in the audience has a tank with no skimmer. He has LOTS of clams and has no nutrient issues.
One, kind of 'out there', (IMO) concept was the use of aptasia as a nutrient exporter. No clear method was discussed for the implementation of this. Might be a fun project if someone also wants to raise Bergia.
Mangroves were discussed. Seems like they grow so slow and only grow well if there are lots of nutrients, their usefulness is limited. Nice for a biotope tank but no a great nutrient exporter.
In a kind of off topic comment he mentioned issues with low Potassium affecting the coloration of, IIRC, LPS corals. I'm going to check with him to make sure I remember this correctly!

They didn't have any Trochus sp. snails that I saw when I was there. I picked up 10 more last month.
Found an inverted Trochus snail on my frag rack foot up this morning. The point of its shell had gone into a hole in the rack and it was immobilized and on display. Must be how snail gynecologists do their thing, you know, instead of stirrups... :lol2:
