cat interceptor vs dog interceptor

Hello All,
long time lurker on the forum but never really needed to post.

I've been researching on using interceptor to treat sps tanks for "red bugs". I'm curious if interceptor for cats is a suitable alternative, or if it has other ingredients that could make it toxic to marine fauna other than the usual crustaceans?

Also I've heard a rumor that the new interceptor is not reef safe. I'm not sure if the person was referring to the interceptor substitute spectrum, or the interceptor now in production again by novartis.

Has anyone heard anything regarding these two questions?

I suspect the dog and cat medicines are the same product in different doses, but if you could post a label, we could check. Interceptor seems to be marginally safe, depending on what you want to keep in the tank. I'd like to see a specific product label before judging. Is this the right product?

Sorry, I don't have cats or dogs, so I don't know much about their medications.

I don't think I'd treat a tank with that medication, but you could ask in the SPS forum for more information.

check out Milbemax for cats, it has far less praziquantel than the interceptor spectrum that people have had success with.

I used Milbemax, red bugs are no longer

The original formula interceptor is back on the market. Cat and dog interceptor are same just different mg/kg dosing
Elanco now makes it, not Novartis

The interceptor for cats is just milbemycin oxime /same as the interceptor for dogs. Presumably smaller dosage. The interceptor sentinel contains lufeneron . I'd use the plain interceptor.

@cmcocker you are correct it is now being produced by Elanco not novartis.

what seems interesting is on the petmeds site it looks like cats take a higher dosage for their body weight.

I would be using the 5.75mg tablet for 11-25lb dogs dogs which is the same as the 1.5-6lb cat dosage.

What is the concentration of milbemycin oxime in each of those tablets? I think that's what you need to compare to equate a dosage.

Used to be dog or cat was the same box, just had the appropriate weight range for each species listed on it.. But it's been almost ten years since I worked anywhere that carried it

Cats are much different than dogs. They are different species after all, but they have different dosing ranges for many medications, and some meds that are fine for dogs, can kill a cat. Even have different dietary needs, have to have taurine in their diet, for example, or can go blind...
