Cat4101

I would like to know if the CAT4101 can be built like this:

Or if it really needs a capacitor as the datasheet says.

Are you talking about the cap that goes between 5V and GND? Yes you need that to protect the chip.

"A small 0.1uF ceramic bypass capacitor is optional for noisy environments."

Is your environment noisy?
Tip #1...ALWAYS assume it is noisy and include bypass caps on all IC's. Its very..very cheap insurance.

So YES include it.

Last one, Is the 5v provided by the arduino board enough to power 5~6 cat4101 chips?

Don't have the data sheet handy... how much current does one chip consume? That will tell you if you can run them from arduino or if you need an external power. I'm betting its OK, but I'd have to check the data sheet.

Edit: it also depends what else you have pulling current from the arduino. Is the cat4101's the only thing it is doing?

Yes it is the only thing it is doing for the moment!

I think I might need an external power supply... Going to check the current needed for the chips!

Just looked at the data sheet. Should be fine to run several of those from an arduino. Looks like the quiescent current is 8ma max.
