My new set up is up and running only about 2 months so I don't know if that is the cause or not.
Using a 5000k 19watt Phillips led bulb on a reverse lighting cycle.
Ready to remove due to the smell coming from it.
Any ideas whats causing this?(lack of nutrients, lighting,???)
Not sure I really see how its dying (for the most part it looks pretty green/growing) but its probably just due to insufficient light. (not enough light)..
Or its just other algae growing on it,etc...
I'd just remove some of it leaving the good green stuff.. Its good to "export" it every now and then to get those excess nutrients out of the tank..
Is it tumbling so that all areas receive light?
Of course...new tank = stuff is changing/maturing,etc...
What are your nitrate/phosphate levels since you asked about low nutrients?
I'm measuring 0 on nitrate and .39 on phosphate(hanna checker).
I do not I trust the phos reading.Always seem to get unreliable readings from it.
3 fish in tank(240g).very little load at this point.
If you don't mind spending about 150, Tunze makes a submersible light that I just love. Really bright, you can tune the color and because it's under water, you get less light spill. That said, it's spendy for a fuge light.
Look up the Mars Hydro 300 led light. Designed for growing plants indoors, many people have used this on refugiums with good results.
Chaeto needs phosphate and nitrate to grow,(in addition to the light). You also want to make sure your magnesium levels arent over 1500 as that will inhibit photosynthesis in Chaeto.
You're probably underlit, and under nutrient. Look at some planted tank suppliments to does and get to low but readable levels of PO4 & NO3.
