Chaeto... HOLY CRAP!

My chaeto is more "curled" than yours, Saltz Creep. I wonder if it's another species or is this environmental-dependant.

Romunov, I think both. I do know there are over 20 different species of chaeto.

As far as environmental, I think that is the case with my chaeto. It used to be curlier, but ever since I began lighting from the side instead of the top it has grown somewhat straighter. The reason is the strands grow towards the light like most plants, whereas if lit from the top, of course, it is unable to extend above the surface of the water. I have also noticed that side-lighting through the glass has increased growth due to more exposure on the whole mass rather than merely the top of it.

ok ever since I posted the first message in this thread..

its grown from a basketball to TWO basketballs..

guess I'll be cutting it back this weekend

the reason im shocked is that I used to have calurpa (spelling?) and halameda?

in the other fuge but they took forever to grow

not sure if this chaeto is a good thing :)

It's a great thing. The faster it grows, the faster nutrients are being exported from the water column. Your water tests will show this. Chaeto is the best macro. All other macros are less effective or can become potential nuisances.

I notice that when I mess with the chaeto small pieces break off... should I be concerned with it getting into the main display tank?

can a few small pieces become lodged somewhere and create that huge ball over time?

I would imagine it could be pulled out if this did ever happen.

No... the cheato is a "VERY GOOD THING" ... The calurpa is the "bad" thing to have if it goes sexual.... then it releases toxins in the water.... Cheato is what you want ... Just keep it trimmed and sell the excess...

Sure, I do this all the time. I "shake" a ball of chaeto in the tank, and various threads start forming lobes. When they reach a nice size, I just harvest them. It exports nutrients and provides shelter for various animals.

rp marine,
Two of Melev's new bulbs I bought at The Home Despot. They're lighting my 20 gallon fuge (all fuge, not sump) through a whole back pane of the glass (I have space behind my stand to do this). I firmly believe that Kelvin color temp is more important than power for macro growth. These bulbs are 5100 K and I have them on 14 hours out of 24, on a reverse lighting cycle.

Yes, I'm going through that phase atm, probably due to lack of water changes and a glass lid over the fuge that blocks some light, I guess.

I had cyano when I first started using chaeto. After my second dose of Chemi-Clean the cyano never returned and it's been well over a year. I also increased flow in the fuge when I changed to lighting through the side.

My fuge is pretty high flow, at least where the chaeto is... I suspect it's the nutrients or lighting. :D
