thanks jen. i'm still trying to figure out what the heck it is! i posted in dr. ron's forum to see if he could get me a possible id on it. hopefully it's something nice!(read as...'oh this is a new species...i guess you get to name it!'...lol. i wish!)

yoshiod9,

I think it looks quite similar...

They do look similar, but I don't think they are the same. It's hard to tell from just a picture, but Gary's look like the corallite diameter is large. It also looks like Gary's piece is just 3 or 4 corallites. Your piece looks like smaller corallites, less than 15mm, and more polyps. Though the color is astoundingly similar, your's looks more like what people have been calling A.echinata.

Then again, maybe Gary has a serious Macro shot there, and I'm way off. :)

The corallites on my coral are very large, and there's only 3 of them. You are probably right Randy. I can't seem to find anything else similar to this thing.

i can't believe no one really knows what this thing is!.... i'm sure if it was a. echinata more people would've chimed in telling me that it was. lol.

any other guesses or ideas on what the hell this thing is?

stupid ocean and all of its corals....

Send me half of it for inspection and I'll try to ID it for ya :)

Looks like A.echinata but hell I'm a rookie

lol. next time you're out by arden mall, you can come check it out. if it is an echinata...score one for me! lol. until i figure out what it is...i'm gonna keep hunting to figure this one out.

oh yeah, did you end up getting that red echino from that store? if you wanna half it we can offer him 100 for it...i am new to the area and someone told me of the store so i went to check it out...saw that piece and talked to the owner about it. he is the most clueless man in the world for coral. when i told him i wanted to ask about a piece of coral to see if he would sell it he said," oh the toadstool...yeah, that's not for sale."....... i was kinda dumbfounded that anyone would want to buy that thing...but to each his own, ya know? anyway, i saw your post here not too long after and yeah.... so let me know if you wanna go half and half or something. =)

Its a very nice coral, no idea what it is. I would say that its def not echinata though. How big are the coralites?

they range is size from less than a half inch to more than 2 inches. ....come on mane...i know you know what this is! =)

Their size are kinda small for vitiensis...If it is an acan then my best guess would be acan ishigakiensis. Pic number 4 or 8, page 31, volumne 3 in the Veron set. Pic number 8 is a much closer resemblence.

Please understand that this is my best guess from your pic and the pic in the Veron set.

Rare find btw. :)

HTH,
John

nope...the piece is just as is. nothing extra besides where it has already grown. frags will have to come after i figure out what it is and how hardy this bad boy will be. =)

now that looks a bit more like the piece i have...are the mouth areas concave or convex on that species? my piece has concave mouth openings and the piece is entirely flat in growth patterns.

that does, however, look dead on like gary's piece! good find bro!
