Hey all, im new to the whole marine tank hobby, and was going to be setting up a 29G biocube for my first tank. Im trying to find somewhere local that has decent prices on live rock and live sand... the closest place (Beyond The Reef) is pretty expensive compared to anywhere Ive seen online... Am I better off just buying the stuff online and curing it myself if im looking to save a little $$$ ?!?!?

Thanks in advance guys....

Sho Tank in Mundelin has decent prices. I think it was in the $6/lbs range.

Premium Aquatics is a good place if you want to order online, pick Ground Shipping and it will still be delivered next day.

Since you are only going to need 29lbs -58lbs of live rock, you should put a thread up on CMAS stating that you are looking to buy LR. People generally sell it here for approx. $3/lb. People here usually give live sand away for free or sometimes they'll charge $1/lb for it, you should put up a thread for LS as well.

check with local reefers..you'll get the best deal through a fellow cmas'er.

if you cant find anything, downtown pets has figi lr for $3/lb

either through here or go to downtown pets, you could find some decent pieces if you poke around and the owners are super nice. I also saw some rock for 5.50/lb in old orchard aquarium and 6.99/lb at coral reef.

Just like some of the guys stated, check with the local reefers who is selling or better yet, getting out of the hobby. I got mine for $1.25 a pound from a local reef getting out about 3 years ago. Just keep looking in RC or CMAS.

Sounds good.... I ordered a ton of the stuff yesterday, so im hoping it should be here during this week... I ordered a 29G biocube, a new light mod from nanotuners that will give me 4-36w PCs instead of the original 2, bought a tunze skimmer, a new rio pump that will give me more flow, etc..... As soon as I get all that into my grubby paws I will be setting it up and then looking for the LR/LS. Should I make a post looking for local people who might be selling some now and just tell them I would be buying in a week or so, or just wait till I know I have everything setup to start looking......

Thanks guys.

Oh, and the year of Cobra I have should be evident by the name, they only came in teal one year. :D

Im not very well informed on cobras, i do own one and i know mechanical stuff on them but nothing on stats, guessing one of the 93's?. Embarrasing for a tech isnt it?

HAHAHA.... yeah, its a 93. Its my baby..... although since buying a house I havent been able to do too much to it, gotta buy crap for the house. :D

I usually go to svtperformance.com not sure if thats the site you were talking about or not though.

I think Rio powerheads had problems with leaking oil into tanks. Not sure if the problem has been fixed, hopefully someone who knows more about them can chime in.

No, i dont know if you have ever visited us but i meant chicagosvt.com
We are like a good large family there, not a lot of traffic but everyone has fun and enjoys posting about anything. Kind of like here, i will not quit that site as long as i have a pc available(i say the same thing about reef central).

Ill have to check that site out DOHC97, sounds like a good site.

I havent heard anything bad about the RIO pumps, thats why I decided to go with them. Most people were using a MJ1200, but after seeing how many watts they used versus their flow, I went with the Rio. I was reading about people having problems with their BC29's and their temps raising up 3-4 degrees after adding the MJ1200.

MJ1200 - 295 GPH, but 20 watts
Rio 6HF - 350 GPH, but 15 watts

I thought it was a no-brainer at the time, i'm going to look around to see if people were having problems with that pump though now... thanks for the heads up.
