Check Out the Durso Pipe I Made

So far, I've made three of these. Very easy!

Here's where I found the instructions.

This one is for my new 120 gallon AGA.

Speaking from experience: Lose the slotted pipe. Within a year it will become so encrusted with tube worms, etc....your flow will become reduced. Only difference between yours and what I did was the bottom...I used a cap drilled with a "million" holes.

Now I removed the slotted pipe and leave the bottom completely open...I cover the overflow to prevent snails getting in and algae from growing.

Good luck.

I like my durso's as well.

I dont have the slotted pipe either. I have egg crate in the elbow to prevent snails..

You'll love em, I'd concur with Tony and say to lose the slotted ends.

slotted pipe is useless....just some eggcrate is all that is needed

Joe, as I've told you many times before, DO NOT respond to any of my posts or threads. Your input is NOT wanted or appreciated.

Tony and Keith, thanks for the input.

I've been using my first Durso pipe for almost two years now. It only has slots along the sides, the bottom is completely capped. I'm not thrilled with the flow, but the overflow slots are the bottleneck for me anyway (and I've already carved them wider).

The two pipes I just made both include an open end (with eggcrate) in addition to the slots. I wasn't sure which to go with, so I went with both. Given the open ends, I'm confident that my flow will be fine, even if the slots get clogged.

I hope I'm right cause everything is already cemented together. :)

Of course, how much flow you put through it is important as well. I was pushing about 1000+ gph through it (I was also using the 'return' bulk for drain in the overflow - dual drains).

I assume with the eggcrate on the bottom, it'll be fine, but the slots will eventually get clogged.

Good luck.

Chris,

Did you happen to talk to Rich about it when sitting with him at the MACNA dinner?

Not sure if you realized when you were back with us(HVRK/CDMAS/Reef Nutrition folks) that 'the standpipe guy' was at your table.

He is not breaking the User Agreement by participating in this thread, so I would recommend putting him on your "ignore list" if it really bothers you that much.

He was sitting across from you. Salt and pepper colored hair...one of the guys teasing the heck out of Jay. ;)

I'm glad you were able to join our happy little group for the banquet. Sorry I didn't chat with you (or others) at dinner. Randy and I only get to see each other a few times a year and we sort of forget there are others around us when we get together.

Good Idea, I always had to play with the PVC cap to get the right air flow and it was always a pain.

I simply drilled the holes and that was good enough for me, no other adjustments needed.
