check valves from lowes?

You really should not rely on a check valve to prevent a flood. All check valves are prone to failure, and due to Murphy's law, it will happen at the worst time. As far as the valves available at Lowes... The stores here carry flapper type that have metal inside them. They are not suitable for reef use.

This company has some check valves worth looking at. I have no personal experience with them. I was pointed here by another reefer that I met in a fish store. He said he'd been using them on a closed loop below his stand for a while with no issues. Turns off the CL for feeding daily and stated that he had no backflow. They worked great.

I've used a wye check valve similar to the ones offered at championlighting.com. They work 99.9% of the time if you clean them often but I would try to eliminate the need for them if possible because I believe no check valve in the hobby is 100% reliable.

my lfs sells flapper type checks with no metal parts and it has worked fine so far. however don't depend on it.

Savko.com has them. The are clear ( to see inside incase of snails) and they are a union as well.

I use two of them without issues, but as stated above, I would not rely on them for flood control. Verify before installing that when the power goes out, all is good without them.

Why would you have backflow on a closed loop?
