I am now convinced that having random colonies die for no apparent reason in one's reef tank is normal.
Sometimes trying different things to try to 'fix' the problem will make it worse. If you're only have 1 or 2 things die on you, and everything else is fine and dandy, I would not make any drastic measures to try and fix it.
As long as you can confirm that your salt and water are good, increasing the frequency of water changes have almost always solved my tank woes. It is finding the time to do this has always caused me grief.
Your tank better not crash. I haven't even seen it yet!
