Chemi Pure Elite

You may remember I placed 2 units of Chemi Pure elite in my HOB filter on my 55 exactly 1 month ago tomorrow. In 9 months of enjoying the hobby I have yet to conquer the cyano algae that grows in my low flow areas of my tank as well as a nifty coating of glass coated algae.

As of today my algae is 95% gone. I'm hoping in another week it will be gone for good. Hurray!

Just an FYI, the instructions say to "rinse lightly" before placing in a high flow area of filtration. A light rinse will produce a gush of black water. A healthy rinse seemed to better fit the bill.

Glad to hear you are winning the war on algae! Here's to you and your tank's continued good health!

and +1 on the extra rinsing. I always end up running like 3 gallons of water through my GAC and GFO before I'll place it in the aquarium. If I don't, some extra fines always seem to find their way into the sump.

FYI, Chemipure is a decent grade of granulated activated carbon mixed with some deionization resin.
The resin is harmless but useless in a salt water application( it takes out good and bad dissolved solids and exhausts almost immediatlely given the relatively high total dissolved solids in salt water) but you pay for it.
The Chemipure Elite contains those two things plus some granulated ferric oxide( gfo) which adsorbs PO4 ; reduction in PO4 should limit cyanobacteria.

Personally, I never use mixed products. Some people like them, but I prefer to know exactly what I'm putting in in a ratio I define. But then again I'm kind of particular and a complete control freak :)

GFO and granulated activated carbon run separately are less expensive and more efficient as change out times for these two media may vary.
Chemipure elite inaneat little bag is convenient, particulary for smaller tanks without reactors or sumps and or no reactor(s) for carbon or gfo. Chemipure works to remove organics via the gac and PO4 via the gfo, but there are other ways to accomplish organics and PO4 removal usingteh same active ingredients. The resin is just an extra cost that isn't useful in slat water.

Chemi Pure Elite

personally, I've never used this product because I saw no reason to....

GFO and GAC are "standard" chemical filtration tools that are much less expensive
