Just curious about them. I dont see a lot of people keeping them. I know this is probably because there large price tag, but im wondering if that is the only reason. I think they are beautiful fish, i just never see them around! I saw one at exotic the other day and it got me thinking about it. Are there other reasons i dont see them around much other that the price tag? Dont know a bunch about them so i thought i would ask. And no, i dont plan on getting one :D.

Thanks all.

ive seen pictures of them as they were older and they seem to lose ALOT of there color maybe that is why

I have one in my reef tank gets along with all my other fish. a great fish to have if your thinking about getting one.

All Tangs tend to be ich magnets, something to do with the lack of or poor slime coat. Chevrons tend to be a little more pricey ($60-$70) as compared to the flashy yellow or blue tangs considerably cheaper and more abundant.

Exotic used to have them pretty regular while on Florin ave along with Potters angels.

I went through a streak of bad luck with tangs and avoided them until the sailfin I currently have.

Because of the price and that they aren't readily found, I think is your reason why.

Personally, I love them and think they are one of the cooler ones to have........the Achilles is another I like......and yes there is the Gem.

They tend to be blue stripped as juveniles and this darkens to near black as adults.

Here are some others you won't see localy:

very nice dots, what a beauty! I think the chevrons are one of my favorites. I think its due more to avalibility then price myself, as i rarely see them, just looking to gauge what others thought. I never purchased saltwater stuff back when exotic was on florin, but i have purchased all my freshwater and koi there for a for years. As for the potters angles, i see they have them stocked all the time at exotic. Anyway, very nice chevron, im glad to see some local people have some.

I just got one myself. It is a great fish. They usually go for more like 100 bucks though, not 60. They are very hard to get however but IMO well worth it.

One of the reasons they have always been rather pricy is they are deep water, 100 ft or deeper (only adults which are less attractive IMO are found shallow). This makes collecting them much more difficult. Also they don't usually hide they run so without drugs the only sure way to collect them is to set up a barrier net, again not easy to do in deep water. Another big reason they are going up in price is most of their range is now off limits to collectors so the available number entering the hobby is going down but the popularity is the same.

In Hawaii I've seen the chevron tangs mostly in the 50-70 foot range, they're relatively shy and like lots of hiding places to swim into, and they're not easy to find-similar to flame angels in all of these characteristics.

At 50-70 deep an red/orange fish appears very deep red, almost black, which makes it harder for predators to see.

It's easy to find hundreds of the yellow or blue tangs, but much harder to find even one of the flames or chevrons. I was at a dive site in Fiji called "Blue Tang" and there were thousands of them swimming around. I should find that video.
