Chiller question

I have a friend doing a 300 gallon freshwater tank that needs water temperatures around 60-65. He is going to use a 1 hp Tradewinds chiller. The aquarium will be reef ready with two overflows down to wet/dry. Ideal would be to plumb the return pump to the chiller and then the chiller to the returns on the aquarium. Correct?

However, optimal flow for the chiller is 3000 gph. Filter and overflows are 1600 gph.

Am I looking at this wrong?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
 
Best bet would be to look @ the specs again.
They usually have a Max & Min for flow.
Remember chillers put out a lot of heat.
Some place them outside, when I ran one I vented it out a window.

The company he is purchasing from said he needed a 1 hp but when I did an online calculator, it said 1/4 hp. That's a big difference.
 
3000 GPH is way too much for most chillers. Check those specs again. They are usually in ranges so 3000 GPH might be a the high end of the range.

Depending on the ambient temp of the home, 1HP might not be enough. Most chillers can handle very large tanks with a few degree drop, but if you are getting up 10-15 degrees, then the gallon capacity comes down quite a bit.

Yes, return the water through the chiller to the aquarium. If the chiller requires an external controller, put the sensor in the aquarium, not the sump.
 
Specs say 25-50 GPM. So we are looking at 1500 - 3000 gph. Good. We can scale that pump size down a bit. The tank is actually going to be in a business with Rainbow Trout. Temperature in the building should stay around 74.
 
Do what I'm doing and split the return pump into the chiller and simply dump it back into the sump. Doesn't need to go direct into tank if the sump has enough chambers/room.
