Chiller???

How many of you run a chiller? Just realized moving from CO to CA I may need one, I definitely needed one on the when I lived back on the east coast, it was too hot and humid.

Not many it seems after the advent of LED's. Can't speak for anyone, just an observation. Currently I run fans on a controller, does nicely for evap.

Ok cool, Don't even mention eval, its so dry in CO i'm topping off about a gallon a day! I will figure it all out once we get there in a few days.

I run a chiller. I'm on T5/LEDs and it just helps keep temp within a solid 77-79 degrees. I like to have some kind of insurance on heat fluctuations whether that's a controller, chiller or both. If you're doing expensive corals, particularly SPS, I think it can be worthwhile insurance...

@apex I'm with you! It's sps dominant and back east I definitely ran a chiller, in Colorado I didn't need one but didn't think about the heat in Cali until yesterday

Just curious for those of you that run a chiller. Do you use your house air conditioner? My tanks never need them to get below 80.

I run the house AC, but run the tank 77-79. Right now chiller kicks on probably once per day, but summer it comes on 4-6 times per day. I might not need it to run 80-82 degrees but that's just not what I run.

Finally made it into CA this morning! Got all moved in! 93 degrees it was about 46 when I left CO, the AC in the house appears to be OOC! Did get a chance to go to your reef today chatted with Cody a bit! Looking forward to exploring the area more

I actually ordered some fans to see if it will help with temps on my 175. My house thermostat shows 72 but tank temp is always around 83-84 even with the lights off. Not sure why there is such a deviation between house temp and tank temp but hoping the fans will drop it 2 degrees or so.

Anyone care to list the their temp differences between house and tank

Wednesday of this week, temperatures were

Outside: 93
House: 77
Tank: 80.7

I haven't seen my tank ever get over 81 degrees yet. No chiller or fans have been added either. But I do have some blocks of frozen RO/DI water to add to the sump if my AC breaks down like it seems to be happening every summer for the past three years.

My house AC at 77 my aquarium usually is 79-80 on average and once in a while 81 degrees. When it hits 80 i open the window at night and have fan blowing air in, by 8am morning its around 77-78. From my observation, aquarium temp on the most part will be 2-3 degrees higher then house temp.

I am getting tired of constantly monitoring temp, turning on fan, opening windows, etc. I'm going to install chiller and not have to worry about it too much.

Yeah I'm a set it and forget it type of guy just one less thing to have to remember to do, we spend so much time on maintanence we forget to appreciate the gems in our systems

I usually don't run my AC until it's about 90° in the house. My tank never got above 82 with a small house fan on connected to the Apex. I run T5s. This was a 50 gallon tank and it evaporated about a gallon a day. Good thing is the water here is relatively clean and my RO lasts a long time. I plan on building a peltier chiller for my frag tank build to cut down on evap cooling.
