Chillers

In the northeast region it only gets hot few months and even with MH, we can get away without chillers.

How about in Alabama, lets see if i get 120G tank with dual 175W MH, do i need chillers? Do most people here with MH lighting have chillers?

I just set up my 75 gallon and put dual 250w halides in the canopy. Canopy is ~16" tall with an open top and back, and I am not using fans, or a chiller. Temps haven't gone over 80 yet. :) We keep the apartment at around 73-75 degrees.

I am planning to have fans. Keep me posted how your tank does with the Temperature.

We have a 225 w/ 2-400w & 1-175w MH. Also a 190 w/ 2-175w & 1/400w MH. The canopies are open back with a fan in each end, 1 blowing in and the other blowing out. Both tanks have 2 VHO actinics as well. The temp will get in 84 - 86 in the summer when they are all on but we've never noticed that to be a problem. They've both been up since 2000.

I have a 120G tank with a pendant fixture with two 250W DH MH bulbs. I have a 6 inch clip on fan over the sump. My tank temp hovers around 82 to 84 in the summer time (late afternoon) with the house temp set to 78 degrees. I was considering a chiller, but Eric Borneman told me that he saw no problem with the range. He recommended that I consider a fan over my display. He said that an 8 inch Vortex fan on his tank drops his tank temp almost too low.

I think a lot depends on where you keep your thermostat set. My family (wife and 2 daughters) insist on keeping the AC set at 74 in the summer. My son says its cold enough to hang meat in the house. So.... my 40g with a 400w halide and 196w PC's rarely gets above 80 degrees.

I have 2 250w MH and 2 110w Actinics and my house temp is around 72 degrees...my tank usually stays between 77-79 degrees year round! 90 gal tank

I'll 2nd Tomoko Schum. My 120 with 2 VHO and 2 175 MH only gets around 82. I have been using the smaller computer fans but have considered adding a vortex type fan and throwing it on a timer during the middle of the day. Pretty nice fish feeder on temp

I just checked it about 30 minutes ago and it was at 82 after the lights were on for 8 hours. The house thermostat was set a little higher than normal @ 76.

Is there something special about vortex fan? Any info would be helpful.

Also what's the lightperiod for your tank? In summer time and in general i changed the lightperiod such that they won't come on till around 4.00 PM and stays on till 11.00 PM. I think that way i can enjoy more when i come home from work and temp tends to cool down a bit around 4.00 PM then mid day temp.....(Don't know about Alabama but tend to workout really good here in North East)
