Chinese LED Lights

hey guys, I'm about to order some lights and wanted your opinion on the layout. I don't want the yellow look, going for a 14k-20k look.

thanks!

No offense but every one of your questions have been answered in like the last three pages let alone the entire thread. Evergrow and twilight are the most ordered on the thread and adding more than blue/white will get better results. At least adding different spectrums of the whites. It's all covered in this thread and even more in depth in the older closed thread. Good luck and have fun reading LoL.

none taken thanks for the help. i'll start reading

You would have to see older pics posted, as because of the hurricane, I may be out of power for a week or more, and will most likely lose my tank.

I am sorry to hear that about your tank, best of luck there.

I really don't know if sol blues should be considered a replacement for a halide at 75 watts its too weak and for some reason they used 6000k leds instead of more appropriate 10k. Still you have a point and I guess we will have to test and see what combos work best

The tank dipped to 65 degrees before power came back on (thankfully) an hour ago.

It looks 50/50 alive/dead right now, so I'll give it some time and see what recovers.

No power for a heater is a killer. There really aren't many backup solutions for that, and a ups only lasts so long.

I was looking at reefbreeders controllable light. It states on their web site it comes with channel 1; 16 7500k cool whites, 2 480nm blues, 2 520nm greens, 2 630nm red, 2 660nm reds, and 4 410-420nm violets. Channel 2; 27 450nm royal blue, Channel 3; 3 480nm blue moonlights, for a total of 55 3 watt LEDs. That adds up to 58 leds. Am I missing something? Also, what color will the produce 12k, 14k?

Sorry for your loss...:uhoh2:

Bhazard451, you have the custom warm white and natural white "D120 type" light.

Can you please write your final layout of the leds? I dont know (and many other users who wants to go natural white and warm white combo) how should i do the layout and which leds to combine to get decent spectrum and look.

I think this would be very helpfull and will be used as a Full spectrum led layout bible and you wont get new question from many users which leds should be used...

Regards,
Iztok

I've been following this thread and purchased two of the d120 with auto timer, manual dimmer from twilight. I ordered just one to make sure I would like it then ordered another. I used Bhazard's layout from the old thread. I like them. But the second came with a couple of issues.
There is a slight electrical shock from the blue dimmer when I adjust it. With shoes on I don't feel it. I took it apart to make sure the unit was grounded and could not find anything out of place. Has any one else had any issues similiar to this? Seems like I need to send it back. The exspense involved would not be worth it.
Put an email in to Jason and haven't heard back yet.

What do you think about your twilight fixture in comparison to the evergrows?

There is no final layout. The led quality, brands, color temps, spectral plots and brightness all vary between manufacturers. The best thing to do is mimic other fixtures on the market, or follow a 2:1 blue : neutral white or 3:1 to 4:1 blue to nw/ww, and add violet and a few colors that provide photosynthetic peaks (red, cyan)

Just to throw this out for those that have already been using the D120. Can we all chime in and report our progress and and upgrades using this light? All positive and negative of using the Chinese LEDs rather than limiting it to just the D120.

I have had my D120 for 6 months now. I have changed the leds on both white and blue channels. I swapped out 2-cool whites (10/12k) for daylights (7.5/8K). I also took 2 more cool whites for red leds. On the blue channel I swapped out 4 blues for violets.

I run the blues 1.5 hour before the whites. Run the whites for 6 hours. Run the blues 3 hours after the whites are off for a total of 10 hours of light. The light hangs 8" above my tank with 90degree lenses. The whites are set at 40% and the blues are set at 70% (I like the blue)

So far, I have seen growth in all my corals except a few odd-balls which may or may not be contributed to the leds. Mostly zoas, palys, shrooms, GSP, YSP. All have done well. The tank looks nice and colorful. I didn't take any pics before I added the led but I have some more zoos coming and plan to document the growth to see how well the leds do. Biggest growth by far were the mushrooms which now I have to frag and get rid of as one part of the tank is exploding with them.

Alage issues are hardly there. Maybe a few brown hairs here and there but easily controlled with a clean up crew. Coraline is growing good and things are progressing positively. After having MH and T-5's I can say this led light is by far been the best for my tank in growth and overall health. I was skeptical at first given that led's still are not there yet, but after tweaking it a bit and doing research, it is working good for me.

If anything, I may put some green leds in as Bhazard did for more pop. I would also like to see a longer version of this light as well. I have a 36" long thank and it covers good but a few more inched would be nice as opposed to buying 2 units. Maybe a custom made DIY led light might be in the future.

As for the D120 itself, no problems. I have the one with no heat sink and so far the fans cool it nicely.

Any idea on where or when I can find the new 24" units info? I went to both ever grow and reef breeder don't see them ... want to look into specs and how many leds it has and stuff

Very nice review. I bought my d120s about the same time as you did from evergrow. I am very happy with the overall output and quality of the fixture. Now I'm looking to swap out a few cool whites fore some nw and 660nm LEDs. Did you order your replacement LEDs through evergrow, and if so what did they soak you for them?
Thanks

5,000K = 100% Neutral White (Excellent for freshwater tanks!)
9,000K = 20% Actinic Blue and 80% Neutral White
10,000K = 50% Actinic Blue and 50% Neutral White
12,000K = 60% Actinic Blue and 40% Neutral White
15,000K = 70% Actinic Blue and 30% Neutral White
20,000K = 90% Actinic Blue and 10% Neutral White
22,000K = 100% Actinic Blue

I got them through Sam from Evergrow. The first ones were free about 6 of them and the next batch I paid $20.00 for 4 red/ 4 white/ 4 violet/ 4-uv I think....LOL Sam sent me the wrong whites the first time. I got 12k's and wanted 10k's Second order fixed that.

I have 2 red left, 2 violets and 4 uv. (don;t see any use for a UV led) whites and blues, I will have to check to see exactly all the spare leds I have now. I could part with some if interested. There all bridgelux 3 watt with the 90 degree optics on them. Same thing that the D120's came with.

I am not running any warm whites although the thought has crossed my mind but my tank is doing quite well and no algae issues so I guess I am a little skeptical of the WW. Why change now if things are great? As I posted earlier, green leds may be the only other ones I may try. I will have to buy those on line. I did see some on Ebay but was not sure they were 3 watt ones.

I like the low prices of these lights however I was hoping to control the led lights I buy with an Apex Controller. I know Apollo makes some nice ones but they are $399. Do any of these companies make a Apex controllable led?

Looking at possibly purchasing this layout on reef breeders (channel 1; 16 7500k cool whites, 2 480nm blues, 2 520nm greens, 2 630nm red, 2 660nm reds, and 4 410-420nm violets. Channel 2; 27 450nm royal blue, Channel 3; 3 480nm blue moonlights) Does this sound like a good combination to get 15-20k look, and good for sps? I appreciate any advice you can give me. Thanks guys
