2700-4500k is Warm White
4500-6500k is Pure White(I am guessing this is neutral white)
6500-20000k is Cool White

That is a standard way to label it, but unless they give the spectral plot on a graph to you, or the led's datasheet, it's anyone's guess as to what is actually in the light, or how powerful it is..

bhaz, what do think about makersled heatsinks??? they look really nice to me, but i dont know.

Pricey, with no hanging kit option.
I picked up 2 rapidled heatsinks and a hanging kit for my next build for less than half the price of what a makersled would have been.

how big of a deal do you think it is that the makersled are straight aluminum without the coating that other company's offer?

So it has been almost two weeks, reading, researching, learning and now i have few questions.
I have 125g tank with DIY rapid leds on it but i think i need little more light (transferred it from my old 90)
How laud those fans are?? Honestly that's my biggest concern. My tank is in my living room and noise is my main concern. I believe i would need 4 of those Chinese lights to cover my tank. But 4 lights equal 12 fans!!!! I am afraid it will drive me nuts! so again hoe laud those fans are??

The fans aren't loud, but they aren't silent either. Unless you need complete silence, they are no louder than slight background noise.

+1 Hardly noticable. My skimmer is louder than the fans in the lights.
This issue has been resolved already, they will ship my IT 2040 this week. I'm very excited :lol2:
I have a 120w dimmable fixture that I'm trying to repair after the controller and blue driver went out...I was able to pick up a replacement driver locally as my fixture was part of a group buy and there were some spares available. I removed the controller and display, and added 2nd power cable in order to control the whites and blues separately...everything was rewired and I'm getting power to all LEDs.
Without a potentiometer hooked up to the dimmer cables in place of the controller though, I'm obviously getting very little light out of the LEDs. Now that I at least have power...I'd like to go ahead and add a few potentiometers to complete the cheap repair. Problem is I'm having trouble identifying the wires...in the image below, the 2 dimmer wires originally connected to the controller were the blue and white wires, labeled "GND" and "DC". The third wire, which was not connected is actually red...but the label on the driver indicates that there should be a yellow wire indicated as VCC.
Although I got this far...I don't know enough about electronics to figure out how to test which wire goes where on the potentiometer...or if there is just a simple explanation. Any help would be much appreciated. I know a 9V battery would clue me in if I hook it up to the right wires, but I'd like to make sure I have them IDd correctly so I don't potentially damage my driver.
I'm assuming the blue and white were labeled correctly as + and -, and the board on the controller provided the dimming capability in place of a potentiometer...which would have had the middle connection hooked up to the slightly mislabeled VCC wire?

I have just a "black box" 120w 20w and 20b I love it works great and everything is growing like a weed. You do get some color wash over time but nothing that bad. From everything I read the other color leds are making them full spectrum fixtures (these were not an option when I bought mine). There is nothing wrong with your fixture, it's just not as fancy as the ones with all the other color leds.

Think off copying bhazards design and swapping 4 off the 6500k for red and greens. Is this generally the best way to go and what would be the overall colour temp? Or would I be better off going with the standard reef builders IT2040?
Also, is it worth getting the controllable version for the extra money or should I just go for two of the standard fittings with plug in timers? I mean does the reef benifit from moonlight timers, sunrise and dimmers??

Another thing the IT light has, is the ability to plug into another light. If you need to run two or more of the lights, it reduces outlets needed. 2 D120s would need 4 outlets, while 2 IT lights would only need 1.

Qusetion now is to either go with your original ratio with the exception of swapping 4 off the 6500k to 2 x red and 2 x green, or go with the ************ layout?
Decisions, desicions did you find that yours worked out well?
Also what happens with these if you switch power off to do waterchange etc? Do they keep the time and carry on from where they left off?
Also i think the moonlights on them now are at the edges rather than in the second colomn and second from end column.

Hey guys! So i'm in the same boat as a lot of others. I have a new 96x20x24 that I am building and can't decide on what LEDs to buy. So I went to the LFS and they let me bring home a cheap chinesse unit to try. they told me to set it up over my tank and see if I like it. If I didn't just bring it back for store credit. I figured what the hell if I didn't like it at least I would have $335 in store credit which all of us fellow reefers know that we can burn through that in 20 minutes at the store.
So any way she handed me an unmarked brown box and away I went less $335. When I got home I was surprised to see how little info was actually included with the unit in the box. It was bad enough that there was no branding on the outside of the box, but nothing on the inside as well. Not an address, phone number, or warranty card, just a plain white sheet of paper with some generic instructions printed on it.
At that point I hand pretty much decided to run away from the unit as fast as possible but I decided to set it up over the tank just to see what all the hype is about with LEDs. I was actually impressed with the amount of light such a little box could put out but seeing as how my tank is an 8ft'er I would still need 4 units. Although spending close to $1,500 wouldn't kill my budget, I just thought it was a very bad investment considering I don't think I would have any recourse if there was a problem with the boxes. I was wondering what your thoughts are and what kind of info you have found inside the shipping boxes. Are you guys not afraid of the fact that alot of these chinese unit will never be honored under any kind of warranty? Here's some pics of the unit I bought.
