Chipped corner

Sooooo I got a used IM 40 from another fellow reefer and when unloading it I chipped the corner of the front left of the tank. What are your thoughts on this tank. Should I still use it after applying silicone?

Man that's a tough decision, once water goes in and life has established, you don't want to drain the tank due to a leak. Chip seems to let the glass bond to the silicone ok.
Flip a coin?

I'd say it's fine as long as it didn't go all the way through the pane. I'd apply a ton of silicone in that corner and be good to go

If you're looking for a 'cosmetic repair', why not call some of the glass shops/mobile windshield repair services for a quote

40g tank I wouldn't worry about it.

Now there's that 8' long display tank they're trying (did?) sell at Cali Reef Co, that has a chip in the corner, and that tank is way too big to risk on that.

I've had chipped tanks before but my concern with this one is that the chip is on the inside of the glass pane. It's not so much of a surface chip and it took out more than half the thickness of the pane on that corner. I think I want to just get a new piece of glass, just got to check out the prices lol.

seems like you are concerned that the glass may break at the weakest point and leak right? unlikely but possible. So you want a little bit peace of mind?

I do have a solution for you. I always do. In ebay I have bought the small sized glass cube (similar to a cube paper weight). Buy that. Clean the corner with XENIT citrus cleaner, and then use very little silicone on three side of the glass cube and attach it to thAT corner. If you want to do a clean job then tape the glass edges with a blue tape, after attaching the cube remove the blue tape while the silicone is still wet so that you get a clean line without the silicone smear on glass.

this will give a three dimensional structural support to that corner and will also give support to your peace of mind.
now don't buy a large GLASS cube and uglify the tank. lol
hope this helps.

I'm really trying to understand what you mean by this but why would I apply silicone to three sides? Im totally confused lo sorry.

sorry, didnt mean to confuse you

oops sorry. So let me explain, and then hopefully it makes sense.
Can you imagine a small square cube perfectly fitting into the corner of the aquarium?

You have a chipped corner which we suspect to be the weak point right? you want to provide as much strength as possible to that point and it would be great to provide that support from all angles right?

So, if a square cube could fit into the corner of the aquarium it would provide a 3D support right?

how will you glue a glass cube to the inside corner of a glass aquarium? glass is hydrophilic so silicone will work nice right? let's not use acrylic cube as it is hydrophobic to some extent and silicone may not be a good choice for acrylic right?

But the glass of the aquarium as well as the glass cube should be super clean so we use "Xenit citrus cleaner" before applying silicone either to the three sides of the cube or the three inside sides of the tank corner that the cube will fit into?

a perfect square pyramid will be very nice instead of a square cube but It might be hard to find.

hope this makes sense.

Ok now this makes sense! I was thinking the cube would go on the outside of the tank lol. So this method would be pretty effective? Would a 1" cube work and should I use clear silicone or black silicone? Obviously RTV100 series.

lenght of the crack?

lenght of the crack?

Take a tape and measure the length of the crack from the inside of the tank. The cube side length should be at least equal to the chip length and the cube should cover crack length span . 1" sided cube may be too big. From your photo, judging the length of the crack, a 1/2" sided cube may work well. larger cube will uglify your tank. Black silicone may hide the cube but if you enjoy looking at the cube then use clear silicone. It is a matter of personal preference, i.e., whether you enjoy looking at the tank alone or you enjoy looking at the cube also in addition to the tank.

you need smaller than that

you need smaller than that

Awesome.
I can only find a 1 3/16" cube right now, hopefully I can find a smaller one.

I have even bought 1/4" sided cube from ebay in the past. if you could find one that has one of the edge cut off at the tip then that's even better. It will accommodate the excess silicone that is already there in the inside corner tip of the tank. I have bought one like that from ebay in the past.

try to find the smallest square cube possible. small sided square cubes are much smaller (which is very nice for this application), and large sided square cubes are way too large because volume of the square cube = side x side x side, i.e., x^3.

BTW What is RTV100 series?

The silicone used to glue the glass together

I've literally been looking all day and can't find anything smaller than 2".

I had a very similar clam shell chip in the corner of my 125. It was no problem at all. I wouldn't worry about it one bit. If it was a chip with some kind of crack, definitely worry about it, but a shallow clam shell chip like that is never going to get worse.

Structurally, I think you're fine.
Aesthetically, it would bother me to no end, eventually resulting in a tank transfer or upgrade. I'd bite the bullet now and just get a different tank.

Aesthetically I'm not even tripping lol. What you see in the picture is actually in the inside of the panel. The chip isn't on the surface it's literally carved in the glass somehow. I'm going to fill it with the auto repair kit from homedepot and see how that goes. Tanks been filled for 24 hours and still holding water.
