Chloroquine Phosphate - Info needed

Hello:

My local fish store recommended that I look into this drug (Chloroquine Phosphate) in order to treat Ich, Marine Velvet and Brook.

They tell me that it pretty much treats everything except "worm like" parasites.

Anyone have any info on this?

Best Regards,

Estefano Isaias

You might look into Quinine Sulfate instead:

Nevertheless, as with all three maladies mentioned above, a decision must be made where the affected fish can be treated along with the impact the medications will have on system filtration. It now appears these medications can be considered ‘outdated’ and our fish treated quite successfully in either fish-only or reef aquariums with an alternative product, with no harm to filtration bacterium! This product is called ‘Chloroquine phosphate’ or Aralen®. Similar to Quinine hydrochloride, Chloroquine is an antimalarial drug, and also like Quinine, has similar effectiveness in the eradication of protozoan parasites. The product is available from various chemical supply houses and requires no special license or permit for its purchase. However, as with anything new, it takes time to prove-out the procedures associated with the use of the product.

I have not read any negative remarks about this product, furthermore, on a post a found somewhere it mentioned that it can even be combined with prazipro to treat flukes, etc.

Seems like a really good product to me, and I have cheap access to it!

Chloroquine at 15ppm can be used with Praziquantel at 2ppm. In newly set-up aquariums, you need to monitor your ammonia level after using Chloroquine as it sometimes nukes your biological filter, or at least impairs it to some degree.

I would NOT use chloroquine in a reef tank, it can have unexpected consequences. This is not a new drug by any stretch, it used to be sold as "Marex" in the 1970's

Great info, any idea how I can measure ppm of Chloroquine Phosphate in the water? my local fish store told me to use 1 gram of the powder every 25 gallons that need to be treated.

Any ideas?

Hello again!

OK, so I have done a bunch of research on Chloroquine Phosphate and it seems to be a great solution for the 3 common maladies that aquarists have, Ich, Velvet, Brook...

This morning I was reading the June issue of Aquarium Fish International and they had an article on Chloroquine Phosphate!

Enjoy!

has anyone noticed that after the initial treatment of CP that the Crypto seems to briefly intensify? Not sure if this is due to the imbedded parasites dying and coming to the surface...I have noticed that when I have treated with CP at the first signs of a crypto infection that the fish have noticably less white spots the day or so prior to treatment. Within 24 hours of the first dose they are covered with white spots and then they slowly disappear. Not sure if this has to do with my dosage as I typically use 40mg/Gal which is half the 20mg/L that Goemans recommends.

Anyone else see this happen?

I do have an update. CP DEFINITELY kills lionfish and puffers. I am fallowing a tank that had previous outbreaks of crypto. large angels do not seem to like it either. emp and annularus both did not survive CP treatment. Flame had no issues. Picasso trigger also saw no ill effects.

The pros and cons of CP seem to change every time I read about it. Its even been said that this stuff is so tough on bacteria that it can disrupt a fish's natural digestion---a fatal problem. Three things I don't know: Why isn't CP commonly available? Where can it be purchased, packaged for fish use? How can a hobbyist monitor the concentration of CP in his tank. The last question is what gives me real 2nd thoughts. (I do really have a lot of respect for Bob Goemans, though.)

I have used it many times. All new fish. Including dozing with praziquantel at times. I have used it with puffers and angles. I have also never noticed a bump in ammonia. I usually use a hospital tank with live rock.

Chloroquine is available in the us and Canada by prescription only. Cost can be high. Call your local vet - the powder form, with a gram scale, is easier to use. Cost is less and filler is not an issue. I've used both.

As for dosing, it is pretty simple. You calculate the gms needed to obtain the desired ppm. Then dump it in. It is only dosed once and lasts a long time. You would have to add it to water changes, but not top off.

It is a very potent algaecide.

I have not used it in the reef.

I have also used it in elasmobranches with great success.

Did you use a gram scale to dose and do it in a QT tank?

I dosed it in a fowlr tank. No gram scale as i figure out that I needed 3/4 tsp total for my 90 gallons of water. This is half of the Goemans dosage. No changes in tank water makeup. And I dose the first 1/2 tsp followed the next day by another 1/4 tsp to try and reduce the stress. I have done this will many other fish; tangs, dwarf angels, gobies, wrasses. None have seen the effects like the lions and puffers.
