i've wandered about this quite a bit..... i go and buy 10 chromis, i always expect some to die for what ever reason. i found 2 dead stuck on the powerhead. but week goes by i only see 3 left....

this is pretty common for me to have a 30-50% survival rate and only to last about a year.

is this common?

Yes, I started out with 10 small blue/green chromis 4 months ago. Down to 4. One death was my mistake when I took a live rock out and one of them was in it. Ran out of air. So 50% survival rate for me.

Really only so many ways to get chromis out of a coral head that a slurp gun doesn't fit into, and that involves your favorite type of 25¢ sedative....
