Chronicle of my 180g Aquarium

The amount of tubing to put in your sump will vary with each individual setup. The optimal amount will be so that it warms the RO 'in' water up, yet does not cool the tank off so much that your heater is always on. This would take some experimentation. I would coil a lot of tubing, like 100', and start chopping from there. You'll find a perfect balance I'm sure.

Also, with this method done right, you probably won't need a chiller.

(unless ofcourse you live in a very warm climate)

Psyire, your statement above is very true, after I had posted my previous replay, later that day I was thinking about it and came up with the same things you listed aboveââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦ I am going to have close to 1k water volume in the basement... I would be doing this more for RO production rather then cooling as I am going to have my RO storage tank setup so that the RO unit is not always kicking on/off... I am going to have a low and high float switch and when the water triggers the low switch it will kick on the RO unit until the high switch is reached and turns off the RO unit until the low switch is triggered again...

Things have been progressing nicely and doing well lately.

I figured I'd try my luck with my first SPS corals. I picked up 3 this weekend. I had just enough time to snap some quick pics before going to work. (I should be able to get some better ones later on)

Here they are:

I want to first say, amazing tank!!

thanks for this informative thread, learning alot of what to do, and not at the same time through my own mistakes with my 55g. I am off to buy my aquatronica too.

thanks again for posting your progress and best of luck.

Im curious how you are liking the Black Sand? I am about to be replacing the sand in my tank in about 2 weeks and I thought the black sand would look awesome.

Do you like it so far? Wish you didn't use it now? Loving it?

Thanks !

Ditch, thanks man.

opiy, I'm definately not happy with the Black Sand. I mean it's ok and all, but I'm wishing I would have went with a black starboard barebottom. The more I look at sand in reef tanks, the more I think it looks dirty. No matter if it's black or white.

Psyire does that mean we may see a major overhaul on the tank? Like removing all the sand and putting in some SB? :)

... Or were you just singing a Michale Jackson song? ... it's OK if you were, we are all just reefers here no one will judge your taste in music. :)

More than likely, but not anytime soon. (this is not the exciting update I refered to a few posts ago)

um, no.

I have no wish to put this thread to death. lol

Recently I've began to experiment with different freeze dried foods in an attempt to find a good combination diet for my aquatic friends.

Live foods are tough for me to get regularly as I'm quite far from any fish store that carries them. So I have to stick primarily with frozen or freeze dried food.

I'm testing out these as of right now:

Reef Roids - http://www.polyplab.com/reefroids.html

Blue Lagoon Marine Gel - http://www.freewebs.com/bluelagoon8/

Reef Chili - http://www.reefchili.com/

Reef Chili is really just a combination of other products on the market so there's nothing new here, it's just makes things alittle easier. It works well and I've noticed most of my corals and fish enjoy it.

I've used Reef Roids a few times since I got it a couple weeks ago and I really like how my corals slime up real fast in an attempt to grab as much of this stuff as possible. I haven't seen any other product yet that causes my corals to exhibit such a fast and furious feeding response. But keep in mind this product is intended for LPS and not SPS corals. However I think they both benefit from it's use. (I have only 3 SPS frags at the moment so I'm not quite sure exactly how it's going to affect them)

I only just recieved my Blue Lagoon Gel today so I haven't got a chance to try it out but it looks interesting. You basically mix it 50/50 with water and turn it into a jello substance in the fridge, then you feed however much you want by breaking/tearing it apart. Their product comes in 2 flavors, medicated and non-medicated. I have both to test out.

I'll definately post more as I learn more results on using these foods. Keep in mind that I also feed frozen Mysis, Plankton, & Rotifers. (as well as pellets & nori)

There is one more food that I'd like to try out as it sounds really promising, however I'm holding off alittle while longer until it's got a bigger user base. It's the Reef-resh system by Polyplab, definately check it out: http://www.polyplab.com/reefresh.html
