Cipro treatment log for carpet anemone

Someone else had done this and I found it really helpful (sorry can't recall name). Figured I would document in the event it helps someone else.

Picked up a carpet anemone on 8/28; mouth was open a bit but it acclimated nicely.

After a week I noticed mouth would get looser and while it never spilled its guts it did deflate/pancake once. Wasn't getting a feeding response and body didn't seem firm.

Cipro treatment log for carpet anemone

Started treatment on 9/3. Picked up some Cipro from LFS, not sure how old the tablets are but they are 250mg. My understanding is that Cipro doesn't go bad. Had to pay $5/pill so I bought 4 that would hold me over until my fish flox arrives.

HT is a 10 gallon with heater and MP10

Here are pics on 9/4 after a full day of treatment.

Here is what I pulled out. Some string and some darker balls that looked like mouse poo.

Did a 100% water change and added 250mg of Cipro again.

I'm lighting tank about 12 hours a day with a 140 watt LED light a couple feet above the tank.

Will report back each day with pics and hopefully progress [emoji106]

Day 2

The morning of day 2 right before I turned on lights anemone looked good with mouth closed and tight. Don't have a pic of that.

Here are pics at night before the 100% water change and tx of 250mg fish flox.

Will see how it looks tomorrow. If not significantly better I may increase dosage to 500mg.

Night of Day 3

Looking worse than this morning. Mouth was loose and not as sticky. Still responsive. Pic below is misleading as the mouth tightened up after I nudged the tentacles a bit.

Here is what I pulled out. More stringy stuff and still Brown/black pellets.

Did a 100% water change and upped dosage to 500mg.

Seems like it always looks better in the morning after the nightly treatment. Mouth seems to look more loose after the photo period.

I don’t think I’ve heard of anyone having success treating haddoni with cipro. Honestly, I don’t think it is going to look any better than it does right now in a qt tank with no sand and on top of egg crate. They need to have their foot anchored and in deep sand to look really good in my experience. None of your pics really look like it has a bacterial infection to me.

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm starting to think I jumped the gun on treatment here. I've had plenty of btas and other anemones in the last but first carpet. Mouth has been open but never gaping like I've seen in some pics. I may take it out of qt today since I haven't seen it get any worse or deflate.

Best of luck, carpets are certainly tricky and can decline rapidly.

Just to wrap up the treatment, after 5 nights of Cipro treatment and no deflating i places back in DT.

I think I jumped the gun and treated when it wasn't really needed. Hoping I didn't cause any issues and that this thing pulls through.

Will report back on how it does.

Nearly a week in the DT and no deflating or spilling guts. Mouth is tight. I really think I treated too soon.

Aside from coming unattached after I added two new MP40s (I already had 2, now have 4) I think he was getting blasted. Dug put some sand and places him in between the rocks and turned down the PHs until he attaches firmly.

Still hasn't eaten anything but I'm assuming it hasn't really acclimated yet with all the back and forth from DT to HY back to DT and the crazy flow.

Didn't end well. After a couple of weeks after treatment, I thought things were going well. Then all of a sudden started shrinking and then spilling guts.

Could never get it to settle it's foot. Remained sticky but would never have a feeding response.
