Clam gaping?

Hi,

Newbie here. I just bought a new clam last week, looks like the mouth is gaping. Will it be fine? The clam is about 3" in size. Also, is this a Crocea clam?

gaping is common in croceas. that clam looks like its gaping a little more then normal, u might want to move it up closer to the lights and see if that helps

Yes, I am feeding DT everyday. I am using 4x24W T5 lights in my 20G tank. Is the light sufficient?

clam looks like a maxima

clam looks like a maxima

Due to the scutes on the sides of the shell I think it is a Maxima. Crocea's don's have raised scutes (extended ridges extending from the shell surface (only little growth line ridges).

The T5 with good reflectors put out a lot of light but, the arrangement of Kelvin would be very important....with the Crocea and a 20G...
I could not venture to guess. A 20G tank is too small a too hard to
keep stable. I would get it up higher for sure though..

Maybe someone else will chime in. HTH

The clam has been in the tank for more than a week now. I've put a piece of clam shell underneath it hoping that it will attach to it. Then I will place it higher up on the rock and see how it will adapt to it.

it a crocea! no ?. croceas do grow scales(scutes)they just arnt as strong as in some other clams and are easly broken off

In that case, I will place it higher up on the rocks tonite. Does the gaping means that the clam is stressed and not receving enough lights? I will post more pics of it tonite too so that you guys can have a better view of it.

its a crocea. hit my www i lots of maximas and croceas ,and if u want pm me ur email and ill send u all the pics u want of croceas with scales just like that

it is obvisiouly a Crocea....scutes on a Maxi stick much further out and the color and shape of mantle are a dead give away also!!!

How is the clam doing?
The Scutes look spaced like a maxima. Is the shell asymmetrical? How many ribs does it have?

That is a crocea. You can tell by the scutes. My crocea has scutes also but crocea are boring clams so you can tell near the bottom of the clam where it is slightly more smooth. Maximas scutes are usually very well defined and go all the way down.
