clam on a 5.5g

hi,
i wa wondering if i could put a T. Crocea in my 5.5g. i have a current 12" 38w fixture and do have a ac30 modded with plenty of live rock in the tank. so far i only have a pair of sexy shrimp, many zoas and one trumpet(2 heads) plus 2 yumas. is this enough lighting since it is a small tank? i do weekly water changes and suplement calcium and other things, thanks nelson

its really not a good idea for many reasons. why dont you put it in one of your other tanks that have a much larger water volume and much higher lighting

i do have a larger 90g, but it has 2 vho actinics on 2 10k t5 ho's and for a crocea i dont know if it will be enough. i figured my 5.5g has even more watts per gallon at 38w than the 90g.

It may be okay for the clam to be in the 5.5, but on it, I don't rightly know about that lol!

I think they also filter stuff out of the water to feed. If they only have 5.5 gal to work with, you may starve it to death.

You can suppliement feeding with Kent Marine Phytoplankton or zooplankton. However I wouldnt reccomend doing this. I was going to try to attempt one in a 2.5 gal because of the insane watts per gallon ratio I have, but clams need rock solid stability. That wont happen in a 2.5, or 5.5 gal system. Just evaporation through the day alone can mess with sailnity enough to **** them off, not to mention trace elements the need in the water like strontium, Iodine, and calcium. Im not trying to be critical as it really would be cool to have a clam in that small of tank. I personally wanted one for my kitchen, but in doing more research and through talking with others on RC it really isnt a good idea. If I were you I'd look into upgrading your lighting. You can DIY a 175w MH for a little over 50-60 bucks if you know where to look. PM and Ill be happy to help. Good luck!

i will do a squamosa IN(geewizzitsme just for you) my 90g. problem is find a decent looking one and a small one. so far only one store has one and it is not as nice as some other squamosas.

no1 has mentioned the watts per gallon has nothing to do with actually light output.
either t5s with ind reflectors and overdriven ballast
or MHS

wow this thread is still alive. the t5ho's have separate reflectors for even better restrike. i believe specially for a squamosa it is more than enough. even something like a crocea placed higher would be somewhat sufficient i am told.
