Clam placement ?'s

I just received my first clam the other day. I have a nice little shelf on my live rock where I'd like to keep him, up towards the top of the tank. Problem is, when I look in the tank in the morning something has pushed the poor clam off the ledge and he's down in the rock work somewhere. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to clamp the clam in place or something? I guess at least until the clam attaches himself?

And once the clam has attached himself can you remove him? My clam is under 3" so I think it'd be a good idea to feed it. I was planning on the mixing dt's in a specimen box and placing the clam in it for twenty minutes approach. But if he attaches himself so I can't remove him to put him in the specimen box then I'll have to come up with a different approach.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Wish I'd read your post before I just posted the same question. Thread name= "Jumping clam"

Mine keeps jumping off the rock too. I was going to feed him, so I guess it's ok he doesn't attach, but finding him face-down on the rocks is very sad! Hopefully one of us will get a reply and explain this jumping clam thing!

I had my two clams on the sand bed for almost two months on top of abelone shells. I moved them, attached the the shells on the rock work. The next day, the little one detached from the shell and got comfy in the sand. The other one jumped off the rock work, abelone shell and all, landed upside down, and before I had finnished scrubbing to right side up him, he had flipped over and was fine......his name is now Houdini........:frog:

If they're continually jumping I'd guess they don't like that spot. Maybe too much flow or too much/not enough light? Maybe just a grumpy clam

They were doing great in the sand bed for a couple a' months. Thought I'd move them since it seems to be the concensus that they do not live there in the wild. I have now put the where I want them......exactly where they were before...... What ever it was, I like them on the sand better. I am going to try my luck with a couple of 1- 2" clams.

Still looking for the red/burgundy clam though.
