the clam on the right has never opened more then it is right now and its mantle is a very washed out purple.
It is very responsive and has grown a nice anchor foot.

Is this unhealthy or just the nature of the beast

The one to the left has always been open and the mantle colourful

the clam on the right looks like a crocea, one on the left is a derasa. it shouldn't look like that. can you get a better pic? top down maybe?

How long have you had it?
what lighting do you have?
what are your water parameters?
what tank inhabitants do you have?

you are right--the one is a derasa and the other crocea should open up more

its anchored itself to the rock---how do you move it?--even to get a good picture?

your clam looks like it has something nipping at it. i suspect the coral beauty

thanks--I would have suspected the wrasse

why nip at one clam and not the other?

maybe it doesnt like derasa's. fish can start to nip for a bunch of reasons or none at all. sometimes they pick on one clam sometimes all of them

ok then---I think it might be a good idea to change it's location and try to fool the coral beauty.

how to you move the clam when it has grown an anchor foot to the reef rock?

thanks for the attention

cut the top off of a clear 2L bottle and drill holes in it for water flow and place it over the clam to keep any nipping fish away. if it is the fish nipping at it moving it wont help

or a tang too

-----------hmm--both my wife and I took turns watching the tank yesterday afternoon, evening and even after 12 midnight. None of the fish or the coral banded gave even a passing nibble at the clams.
However----the crocea is always covered with small turbos--on it and around it--does that indicate anything?
