Clams

I've heard/read some folks purchase clams from the seafood department of the grocery store to put in their tanks. True? Good? Bad? Might this possibly introduce possible bad things into the tank? Does anyone do this? How, how often and why?

I have done it with my long nosed butterfly back when and he liked them lol but Im not sure if it was a smart thing to do and I didn't leave it in the tank long.

As a food source? Sure, go for it. I feed grocery store seafood often, as do many other people. There are even recipes for "home made" frozen food using seafood intended for human consumption. Just wash it really well first and make sure you're not overwhelming your tank with too much food. Remove uneaten portions.

As livestock in the hopes that it will survive in a reef aquarium? Not gonna work. Fairly different environmental conditions and feeding requirements.

I get the steamer then freeze them. Once a day in AM I drop on into my tank. My Copper-band butterfly got first crack at the clam when it start to thaw and open up. Once it open more the rest of the fish move in and it will be gone mid afternoon. That is how I feed my CBB. I got lots of Crocea and Maxima in my tank and the CBB does not touch them.
