I am happy to say we were fortunate enough to obtain some spectacular Clarion Angelfish that are now ready for sale. For the first time in over 15 years, legal, conditioned, super healthy and eating pellets, flake, algae strips, mysis and brine Holacanthus clarionensis are available in the Divers Den section of the LiveAquaria.com web site.

What an amazing looking fish, very pretty.

I'm curious to why it was not available before. Was it a restricted species to collect, restricted area, or other? I know very little about collection laws in general.

crab850,
These fish have a limited range, and can only be legally harvested and exported with the proper collection and export permits from Mexico.

Many folks have tried unsuccessfully in recent years to bring them into the US, but one well known collector who has worked in Mexico for many years was finally able to accomplish this again legally, going through all of the proper channels.

Cheers!

saltycreefer,

The Holacanthus clarionensis is an aggressive and territorial species and has a very similar demeanor to the Holacanthus passer. In order for this fish to thrive, we would recommend an aquarium of 6 feet or greater in length. The Holacanthus clarionensis can reach a max size of over 9” in the home aquarium.

It is best housed with other pugnacious and bold fish; however it is very aggressive towards other Angelfish of the Holacanthus genus. We would not recommend keeping more than one Angelfish of this type in the aquarium.

This fish would make a beautiful addition to the large home aquarium and should thrive for many years. We would recommend that this fish be one of the last added to the aquarium, due to the aggression level.

"Super Rare and legally imported into the US, conditioned, and quarantined since February 5th Mexican Clarion Angelfish."

What conditioning has been done?

Some of the other clarions that come in were reported to have velvet, ich and bacterial infections. Was this the case at all with yours and has any treatments been administered to these fish?

Thank You.

Treg,

Sorry for the delayed response. All of the Clarions we received were in perfect condition and did not suffer from some of the infections that were conveyed by others who received these incredible fish. In my opinion the handling of the fish played a major role in how everyone received their fish.

Just like all of the fish that are shipped to us fresh from being harvested in the wild, they are acclimated directly into a smaller system that is run with Formalin and Malachite green. During this time the fish were give 10-20 minute freshwater baths on three separate occasions in RO water that was aerated and adjusted for pH and temperature prior to the bath. Once the fish started to eat which was in 30 hours after receiving them, we added Prazi and Metronidazole to their food every other day, alternating with Beta Gluten. Frozen Mysis is what we use as these fish seemed to prefer mysis initially.

After spending 7 days in our medication system we moved them out to our extended quarantine system, then onto our main fish system that houses all of the fish that are either on the Divers Den or are ready to be photographed and added to the site.

Cheers!
Kevin

I have previously kept this fish and it is awesome. I was able to keep it with an Imperator but I do not recommend that. Tough fish and gorgeous.
